Woudn't this be a great cartridge for the new marlin and isnt this a better Marlin choice than the 338 marlin? 270gr boolit at what 2500-2600ft and maybe just bring it out with a HC lead boolit.

This is nothing more then the 375 JDJ which has been around for awhile .

If I'm not mistaken with the normal bullets you can purchase for the 375 . That being the Hornady 220 , Sierra 200 and Barnes 250 . I believe the cartridges are to long to cycle thru the action .

If you take a closer look at a 444 Marlin factory round they generally have pretty stubby bullets :|

Personally I see nothing wrong with the 338 Federal Express !

But then no one has really seen it yet !

And with that being said , I "still" want one of each version they bring it out in !

i think the 338 marlin is a great round. I like to see them expand and make it in 8mm 358 and 375. I doubt you will see it though as the demand for big bore leverguns isnt that great and i think they seen to many of there creations flop after a few years. When they first introduce something it sells well then the market gets saturated and few more are sold. About the same thing that happened to win. with the big bores. They produced the .356 which is probably the best lever gun round ever made and it fell into obscurity. Anyone of them is surely a hands down better round for hunting then there .308 marlin especially when it comes to cast bullet hunting.

my marlin 375 will feed 38-55 length cases and a 250 gr cast boolit fine
i would bet it would do the 444-375 just fine.
why not just go directly back to the 348 win though. it launched 200 gr bullets
at 25-2600 feet just fine, and the pressures worked nicely in a lever gun.

Max loaded round length for the 336 action is around 2.55 inches. The JDJ brass is 2.2something so that doesn't leave much room for the bullet to project. The idea is sound but the 444 would have to be necked down, and then shortened to around two inches to make it work. I love the 35 caliber cartridges, but there aren't many bullets over 220 grains that would work because of their length, or construction......... same for the 375. The 444 is basicly a rimmed 7x57 case blown out, or a longer 308 straight case rimmed. Some things we think about have already been done. The 356 Win, for example is the .358 /444 wildcat, or the 308 Marlin Express necked to 35 caliber, or close to what it would be if made to fit the existing action. Of course the .223 Rem is a rimless, and longer .357 mag too............... hmmm , 256 Win dies, .223 shell holder.........., fun isn't it?

Say fiver I think your numbers for the 348 with a 200 gn bullet are a wee might on the energetic side. They claimed to equal the 30/06 at about 2700 with a 180 but even that was on the high side of reality with normal safe pressure for the 86/71 receiver.
I think if you chrono some you will find 2100 to 2200 fps with 200gn bulletscloser to the truth than what you mentioned.
BTW my Marlin 375 also has no problems chambering 38/55 ammo.

i was just going by the book numbers. my 71 didn't stay around long enough to chrono it.
the trade was too tempting.
a win 94, a xp-100, and a 358 win rifle, plus some cash for it.
the 348 is still enough cartridge ,though, for most levers and animals.
