I have a Ruger Super Blackhawk hunter in 44 Magnum. that I would like to mount a Red Dot scope on. I'm wondering what mounts or bases I would have to get and if I would have to get the gun drilled and tapped. thanks

One option is the Weigand Ruger mini-scope mount. You remove the rear sight and install the mount. I have one on my 30 Carbine Blackhawk with a Burris FF2. It fits nicely.

I installed a Raptor Engineering mount on my Ruger Blackhawk 41mag with a Burris fast fire 2. Nice and sleek. Works well.

I have a blackhawk wth the weigand mount, and a vortex venom. It is a no drill mount. You remove your rear sight. It mounts there with a screw. There is also a leveling screw. I think mine is great.

I concur with the above folks, Weigand is the way to go. I have some of their mounts on Rugers & Freedom arms.

Aren't the hunter models set up for Ruger rings?

you can or used to be able to find 1" red dots, but they are like looking through a straw. there are also 30mm rings available that open up more options.

They will fit a 25mm or 1" red dot sight. I have a 1" UltraDot and it works great. If you shoot with both eyes open you really don't notice the difference between a 1" or a 30mm tube. If you want a 30mm tube sight, Ruger has rings for that.

I should've said wont accept my red dot. the tube diameter is 38mm. I will have to get the wiegland mount probably.

for hunting purposes would you guys choose a red dot or regular scope. I'm on the fence honestly never liked red dots. I had one on a slug gun didn't care for it. maybe different on a handgun though.

I prefer a red dot because, where I hunt a 50yd shot would be pretty long. With a red dot, I find that I can get off a faster shot compared to a scope.

Myself I prefer a 2x scope on a pistol

I took the scope off and like the red dot much more.

You need this:

This scope mount fits ALL HUNTER MODELS. It puts a weaver rail on your Ruger Hunter while using the Ruger mounting points. I used one for awhile when I fist got my Hunter model.
