I notice these places that sell surplus powder have kind of a system. That is the powders that are not most suitable for a wide range of cartridges are the powders that sell the cheapest. Like 5010 or 860. Both slow powders for 50 cal and up. Very cheap, but the better ones like 4895, 844, 846 are all top price. You know they get these for all the same price when they bid on them. This isn't fair.

Rocklock, I'm with you. No one has it. I have a bit more then that left, but not much more. Amongst other uses its tits in the Garand with cheap bulk Rem 165gr Core-Lokts.

What do you mean "It isn't fair"? It's what is called supply and demand from the seller's point of view. It's the free capitalistic form of commerce in action. From the buyer's it's called "Shopping". There ain't no 'Fair' about it.

I use it in a Savage 110 .30-'06 with a 165gr. bullet (Hornady BTSP).

Also great in a whole lot of different milsurps.

Well, I take advantage of the low prices of some of those unpopular powders. WC860 and WC872 I regard as suitable only for max loads under the heavier bullets in my .300 Weatherby and 7mm Remington Magnums, but boy, do they work well in those applications! And IMR 7383 works well in a variety of midsize rifle cartridges with jacketed bullets, being impossible to overload in several that I use, never being the "best" powder in terms of top velocity, but giving good accuracy at a reasonable velocity level. And I figure that, for instance, my Savage .22-250 barrel will last longer shooting 55-60 grain bullets out at velocities that a .223 might reach with the hottest loads. How much velocity do I really need to punch holes in paper at 200 yards? And do I care that I'm burning 34 grains of $4.00/lb powder to do it in this case, as opposed to 28 grains or so in a .223, when the alternative would be $10/lb. "popular" surplus powder or $20/lb commercial powder? Same thing with the .30-06, where my 52 grains of $4.00/lb powder is giving me .300 Savage ballistics. And in the Weatherby I'm getting 70 shots/lb with $3.00/lb powder, with muzzle velocity at the upper end of published loads, no signs of excessive pressure with what's actually all I can stuff into a case, and very excellent accuracy. The pricey commercial stuff I've found to be rather critical in charge adjustment in this cartridge as it reaches the maximum published charges, and I've damaged some cases in load development before reaching published maxima. Those powders load at about 4/5 as much powder per round as the surplus .50 BMG stuff, but they cost more than 6x as much per pound. The economic benefits of using surplus are clear.

I bought 8 lbs of WC860 so I had 4 jugs and got the free hazmat. $36.00 for the WC860 vs $20.00 Hazmat.

WELL, a full case of it in the 30'06 with a 311466 is the balls. In my 308 with a 311644, its my most accurate load, nearing an inch at 100 yards. A full case in the 22-250 works great, but sooty necks.

I'm thinking about getting 4 more jugs or 2 WC860 and 2 WC 872. that would be a lot of powder for a little money.

.............If you can afford it, you're smart to do it. Nothing gives me a more warm snuggely feeling then having 100+ lbs of assorted powder and 50K+ LR primers on hand. Let it rain!
