View Full Version : Shoot 480 regularly in a 475 cylinder?

I have a Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh. I also have a lifetime supply of 480 Ruger brass for my 480s. I have been reluctant to shoot 480 ammunition in my 475. I'm equally reluctant to invest $400 in a FA 480 cylinder. Assuming I clean my 475 cylinder after each 480 shooting session, what's the consensus on shooting the shorter cartridge regularly in the 475 cylinder?

Well ~ there are several opinions. I only have 100 cases myself which is far cry from lifetime supply ~ however, w/mine, I plan on 'shooting' loads using 480s and warm 'hunting' loads for hunting using 475Ls w/thorough cleaning. I know there are others that will disagree but Its my gun and I reserve the right!

Naphtali;
This could be a very informative thread , at least for me. thank you.

That was a very interesting edit. The first post was completely understandable and well constructed. IMO there was NO need for clarification.
I too, have both .480 and .475L firearms to feed. An early Ruger conversion by JL and a Rossi trapper. Neither have been wrung out so I've no data to submit. My intentions are good but time has slowed my efforts. I'll be lurking.

I shoot 480 R in my 475 L ALL the time and I shoot 475L in my 475 L Maximum ALL the time .Don't worry about it just shoot and clean the cylinder regularly,you will have no problems.

I don't know where I heard it but Freedom might void the warranty if short cases are shot in their guns. It does no harm if the gun is cleaned.
Please, someone tell me the truth.

I think the problem you are going to run into is that shooting them in an allready very tightly chambered gun like a FA is a bit differnt then a loose chambered gun. It isnt like your shooting low pressure rounds like the 38 spec or the 44spec. the 480 runs 50000 psi of pressure and the linebaugh is not far behind it. I guess i have to ask why. You can do anything a 480 will accomplish with 475 brass. If you have brass then why not sell it and buy 475 brass. Lots of guys will buy 480 brass. Or better yet use it for an excuse to buy a new gun. Personaly my next 475 whether it be a custom or a FA will be a two cylinder gun. The excuse i have is i have a 480 rifle and would like a single action to take along with it. But about 99 percent of the time id use the 475 cylinder

I can't speak to .475, but Freedom Arms discourages the use of .45 Colt ammo in their .454 Casull. I don't know about it voiding the warranty. I personally don't use shorter brass in long chambers, if I want less power, I just reduce the load.

On another forum I visit, a guy shot enough .45 Colt in a .454 Casull to erode the area just behind the cylinder throats, then began having case separations.

I just read the same warranty issue thing, yesterday, in the latest Handloader issue. Think Brian Pierce was answering a question from somebody on it.

Sounds like it's not necessarily a cleaning out the buildup problem. From what I've read is that FA is concerned with erosion taking place just ahead of the case mouth. It creates a rough spot in the tight, mirror finished chambers which then allow the 475 cases to stick.
