OK..If you zip is not one of those listed above and you actually sent me money for a mold, you mold was shipped today.

I shipped 10 orders to the U.S., 3 to Canada and 1 to Finland

The number of orders came to 63 for a total of 69 molds. The largest single purchase was 3 molds and four more purchased 2 molds each.

The deal was smooth as glass with no hitches or glitches of any kind. I want to give a giant thanks to 45 2.1, for without his design specs, this purchase could not have been made.

I did the numbers and found I lost a total of 19 cents per mold for a total of $13.00. So when you walked by a Salvation Army Kettle this Christmas, pitch in a quarter for every mold you bought and we will call it square.

Thus endeth the sage of 311407 Mod. happy casting and shooting plus a Merry Christmas to you all.

Well I wish it had worked out so that you had gotten your mold for free and maybe a few $$$ for yourself. Maybe we need to go up to an even $60.00?

I received my mold today and I've already cast some 300+ keepers. I had some problems getting the temp right as this one doesn't want the melt quite as hot as my other Lee molds. I think a couple of casting sessions will provide me with all I'll need for the coming year! Man, this sucker goes through a pot of lead in a hurry. I can only imagine how fast the BD45 sucks one dry.

That's for heading up this group buy.

To all who received a 311407.
I'm new here so bear with me please. I've looked up the bullet in my Lyman
Handbook,cr.1973. Looks like a Loverin. 180 gr, FNPB. RIGHT? :p If so and someone decides they no longer need the mold, I'm nutty enough to take it off your hands.
If I'd joined up sooner this could all have been avoided. Oh well.
If I understand how you'all work this forum, I'm jumping to the thread re;

Pepe..Welcome to the board!.. Our version of 311407 has been modified some from the original Loverin design. Other than some change in the base band diameter we shortened the OAL to 1.000" so it would work in the Lee cavity blocks. We got a bullet that weighs 170 grains.

I suspect that after the shiney wears off, some folks will be willing to part with a mold. That always seems to be the case.

David R
12-03-2005, 08:15 PM
Got mine today. boolit weighs 170.6 grains, .312 to .313 with the front 2 bands coming in at .2995 to .300. Gonna size and lube some tonight and shoot some tomorrow out of my Stevens 308 and enfield. I will report on accuracy. Looks like a nice boolit.

I used the same procedure I always do. Spray with ShopKleen, pour a few, spray again. Pour a few more, smoke with a butane fireplace lighter and away it went. Perfect boolits, no hassle.

The mold gets HOT in a hurry, but prefers to run cooler. Once it getes too hot, the bands don't fill out right. I Used the BruceB method cooling both top and bottom every pour. Filled a 1 lb coffee can in about 20 minutes with verry few rejects. One sweet mold.

This is by far the best group buy mold I have bought. Thanks Mr. Charger.

David..Tell me what alloy you are using. I am trying to keep track of how this mold reacts with different alloys.

David R
12-03-2005, 09:31 PM
Charger,

8 lbs wheelweights and 1/2 lb 50/50 solder. Weights and measures of these are not exact.

The gas check does not stick on the base of the boolit, I put it in the sizer then the boolit because the shank is small. This is NOT a complaint, just trying to give you enough info.

I just sized a bunch. Some had small flaws in the bands. I will use a little more solder to see if they fill out better. Pot was set at 800, boolits are not frosty, but more like a dull matt finish. Not galvanized looking. I probably had 8% rejects which is way to high for me.

Thanks for the great job
David

Mine were not filling out on the lands but lowered the temp a bit & now seems to be fine. Boiled em, smoked em. Wheelweight alloy=173-174 gr. gas checks fit nice, .313" on body, .300" on nose. Good looking boolit for sure. Thanks Chargar...a whole bunch!

Pat..You don't owe me an apology..I owe you one.

In my work, I must be pleasant, positive and upbeat 100% of the time. I am not allowed to be grouchy, grumpy or in anyway human. I relish the opportunites to be human when the chance came up, and sometimes I do so at the wrong times to the wrong people. Such was the case today. You did nothing to deserve my grouchy, grumpy reply.

Various places on the net have becomes my places to let off a little steam that is not otherwise "ventable". Again..my apology...I felt bad the moment I growled at you and I knew I was wrong.

Enjoy the mold and think kindly of this old grouch from time to time.

Something the list members generally do which helps a lot on the high production LEE six bangers for fill and drop is to wet lap the cavities in with Comet scrubbing powder.

First, Comet is a very mild abrasive -- edge burrs and such get removed by the mild abrasive lapping action and drop free improves immensely.

Next, Comet is a strong scrubbing cleanser and it removes the shiney finish and it cleans that aluminum really really well. Whatever it is in the LEE cutting fluids that causes wrinkles and that irritating band rounding on one side is removed by a Comet lapping job.

Next, run your lead as hot as the pot will run and pre-heat your mold really well -- your goal is to run these things six banger style at full frosty heat. Until you really get there (and it ain't so easy on a six banger) you do have issues with fill and wrinkles.

Last, even doing all these things you STILL get a cull rate off a six banger that you simply don't get off of a two cavity mold -- or at least I always have.

==================================================

Lee varies within a large production mold runs on every dimension of a mold. Mine may have good checks and good band diameters and yours may not. His mold might have a skinny nose and fat bands. It is a sad fact of life and why we spend so much time teaching folks how to fix LEE molds with lapping tecnique stickies and such like stuff.

David

David- what's "ShopKleen", and where do you get it?

David R
12-04-2005, 07:29 AM
Pat,
Shopkleen is an alcohol based general purpose automotive cleaner made by Wellworth. You may also find it under the name Shop Solv made by Castle. Its a great brake cleaner type solvent that doesn't stink . I buy it by the case for work. A few cans make it home to clean my molds. I also use it to clean our gas powered RC cars. It doesn't hurt plastic or your hands. It IS flamable. I have proved that a few times.

Oldfeller,
I think the comet thing works on the mold because it cleans the aluminum allowing it to passavate in a "bullet casting climate", not a machine shop climate.

Loading some 308s this morning. Look for an accuracy report.

Marshall...I have the zip on my list as 08019 and it goes to a guy name Marshall in Edgewater PK New Jersey.

It would not surprise me if I miss keyed the digit. They should catch it at the post office and either it will get corrected or it will come back to me. If it doesn't I will either refund your money or send you my extra mold whichever you desire.

Marshall..I checked the track and confirm number and it says it was misrouted, but that has been corrected and it is on it's way to the correct destination. I suspect the funky digit in the zip code caused the foul up. I will be suprised if this is the only one I screwed up.

I wasn't going to do it but went ahead & hurriedly put together a sample of 10 loads kind of helter skelter for the 30-30.
As an aside, I'll include this goofy range trip "disaster" story. My son & I wanted a range trip badly but 'lil Woman needed ride to airport in AM & son needed sleep. Trying to get things together with 18 yr. old son helping (still half asleep) and noone to check on Dad, ended up bringing lots of '06 loads and no .30-30 except for ten I just loaded. Broughtthe Model 94 along but forgot the Sprigfield 06.
Got just a bit of time to get mould working and then wanted to load some 30-30 to try. Finally got 10 rds loaded.
Load is as follows:
Cases=New unfired DWM
Primers=CCI 250 Mag.
Powder=H-335 Dipped from Lee 1.9cc @30+/- .5 gr.
Lube=Felix Lube
Sized .310"
Water Quenched WW
Crimp= Lyman Die Crimped a bit heavily
I couldn't locate my Lee Factory Crimp Die!
OAL=.010" short of the rifling lands.
Another goof up as I usually like to seat em touching.
Rifle=Win. 94 Black Shadow
Group size=10 shots into 2" @ 50 yds.
Nothing to brag about but only can be improved. No weight segregation at all of bullets from 6-banger mold either & one cavity seems to have a gas check shank that's a bit on the big side. Bullet may take place alongside 311041 as being best 30-30 full power for me.
