Hi fellas,

I bought a new Marlin 30-30, 336 Texan Deluxe last fall and it's my first go with microgroove and cast. I tried different boolits sizing from .309 to .312 and it would shoot a couple rounds in 2" at 50 yards and then throw the next one 4" from the group. I was busy at the time so just put it up till a couple days ago.

I started messing with it again the other day and couldn't get it to shoot anything consistently. I didn't have any factory rounds and pretty much decided that I'd just give up on shooting cast in microgroove barrels even though all the post here said they worked fine.

I decided to take the forearm off and see if I could see a problem and there it was, the through bolt/screw on the forearm barrel band was making heavy contact with the barrel and tube and the band was very tight on the forearm. I did some file work on the barrel, tube and the wood on the forearm and it seemed to do the trick.

Here's the first 3 shots at 100 yards just under an inch. 25 grains of R7 and the NOE 311-165 RD. My Chrony says its running 2080 fps

It's pouring rain here again so I quit with it after busting a couple water filled milk jugs at 130 yards. I'll shoot a few 5 shot groups with it before I call it good but I'm feeling pretty good so far. So.... my microgroove issue wasn't a rifling issue at all.

Just posting thinking it may help someone that's having a similar issue with their lever action.

PS, I used an old target in the picture. The big holes are from my 45/70 a while back.:)

Good for you. I've never had a problem shooting cast bullets in a Microgroove barrel.

What size did you end up shooting?

.311 on those. I still have some .310s and .312s in the RD and 311041 I may try later on but the .311s seem to be doing well so far.

My Model 336 likes 0.309" cast bullets. This was the only size die I had, so I tried it. There is no reason for me to buy another.

I had .309 and .310 dies but bought a .311 and a .312 chasing what I thought was a microgroove problem. I'm sure any of them will do at least a fair job now that I've found the issue with mine

I'm starting with .309" in my Glenfield 36G because that's what I have, too. 50 yds has looked promising with Lee C309150 and I just got the C309170 to try.

My Winchester rifling seems to like .310-.311. Marlin's micro-groove on the other-hand seem to like .311 or better yet .312.
N.O.E {Ranch Dog design} is a short & stubby looking cast. A cast look that Lyman & RCBS prefer not to duplicate.

In my 30 cals., if a .311 chambers and it does in all including a post 64-94 30-30 but a bit tight, I shoot it. But I don’t have a microgroove. Glad you found your issue and didn’t give up.

With forearm removed and metal reinstalled check mag tube to barrel contact at front of relief cut on barrel bottom. Dollar bill slide for check, have found more than a few contacting hard there. Does it make a difference, who knows, but always fix it on walk through on first tear down. I have a few that spook me how accurate they can be.

Thanks. I'll check that also.
