A little practice

I've been trying to do more of this kind of thing lately. My target berm is 100 yards from my front porch. My hunting shots are normally from a seated position in a tree stand or blind, so I sit in a char and either use my shooting sticks or just elbows on knees. Targets are standard paper plates, about 8-9" in diameter. I figure that's close enough to a deer's vital area. Not sure how much good it's doing me but it sure is fun.

Since it's dried out, I had a friend clean out the pond in the pecan bottom. When this little mound of dirt settles it will be a good shooting berm/and or sitting place to get squirrels or deer. Plus the calves get to play king of the mountain on it. I rescued that 30-30 from a pawn shop for $250. It was scratched up wood wise but good otherwise. It had a Valor 4X fine crosshairs scope on a Weaver swing over mount. I put three Remington 150 factory rounds in it to see how bad it was. All three were in a neat 3/4" triangle one inch to the right at 100 yds. The scope got moved to a .22 and I'm looking for a vintage Lyman or Redfield peep for it while I use the original sights. My nephew got it from me for a few years but recently traded it back. It's here to stay now!

I have a Win 94 .30-30 that looks just about exactly like that at 50. Certainly good enough for me.

I don't have a .44-40 but I do have a pair of .44mags that look very good at 50. 1.5 inches lower and half an inch right at 100 says to me close enough.

Not sure I'll ever pull the trigger on a deer again, but punching paper does not hurt anything.

I was at a customers home one day and we got to talking about guns. He was a nice elderly gent and he asked me if I would have any interest in his shotgun and rifle. Turned out he had a nice Baker Special side by side 12 gauge in pretty good shape. He also produced a Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 of 1929 vintage in outstanding condition. The rifle had an excellent bore with clean and sharp edges and the action was as smooth as butter. The wood was worn but kept up well without any of the usual cracks. We settled on reasonable price and I they followed me home. The 94 is a tack driver for a lever gun. At 150 yds I have been getting 3 to 5 inch groups with factory fodder of 150 gr. I will be casting some smooth sided spire points of 150 gr to try. A great old gun.

Potty training the 44-40. The two lowest shots are offhand at 100 yds. The rest are at 60 yds sitting, getting rid of some 180gr jhps. My trigger follow through needs improving.

The 8mm is in the rotation for sure. 8x57 is my favorite over .30 cal round for mice to moose.
