View Full Version : Dillion broke...

My 550 primer seat stroke got really mushy, and quickly stopped seating primers.

Turns out this is a known problem at dillion as they had it diagnosed in about 15 seconds...

You'd think equipment would last longer than 22 years and an estimated 100,000 rounds (sarcasm)

I view it as a badge of honor that I was able to "break" a dillionhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180724/b1a4d1423fcd5c11eba184518bfcba0f.jpg

Uh, Walks, you're really not supposed to use a sledgehammer (or C4) to move the lever! :P Must have been a rather unusual part, pre-cracked or something.

I see this was posted today (Tuesday) just after midnight. Let us know when you have it fixed. I hope it's this week.

I had the same failure and when I attempted to purchase a replacement bell crank, Dillon sent me one for free.

They just wouldn't take my money and I had the replacement part on the machine in less than 72 hours.

I'm a Dillon customer for life.

They have a habit of doing that, apparently. IMO a very good habit :)

must have been a casting flaw. Id bet my 550 had loaded AT LEAST 5 time that many rounds. I do occasionaly squit a bit of kroil on the bushing parts and ram. Im not a big fan of my lnl progressives but Hornady did a smart thing putting grease fittings on them. Ive thought about taking the 550 apart and drilling and tapping it and put grease fittings on it but I just never seem to find the time. to busy pulling the handle.

Whenever I feel any sluggishness I give a touch of lube. Imperial Sizing Die Wax works well on the ram, any thin oil on the joints.

It seems like if Dillon sees the same failure very often they improve the failed part. I've had very few breakdowns on my 550 and all of the replacement parts were better than original.

I just cant get my 650 to break, i would like to try out their no bs policy’s but it just keeps on ticking like the eveready bunny. Lube ram with chainsaw bar oil, very little. One or two drops on finger per month. Sad.

I tore my 550 down and clean and lubed it per their YouTube videos and holy cow it was like nothing I’d ever seen. Now I plan on doing it every 10,000 or so rounds.

Mine broke exactly the same way about 15 years ago. I discovered it when my primers would not fully seat.

I do think it was a casting flaw in the original bell crank and I think Dillon addressed that problem.

My replacement has been chugging along nicely.

It is really in Dillon’s best interest to make them unbreakable. Thus saving the cost of replacement parts and shipping.

on my SDB I broke the handle twice--each time the replacement was upgraded. Third one is still working after 25 years so think they've fixed that problem

The other bonus for Dillon on improving the parts is that it DOES improve customer liking of their products! I won't suggest that someone START reloading on a Progressive, but once you "have it" right, a Dillon product is a nice upgrade. Just have to have some OCD when using any progressive :P

In remembrance of Mike Dillon and his No BS Policy, he set the trend.

I have 2 Dillon 550B's One setup for Small primers and the other for Large. I've ran countless rounds thru them both. I have a can of " dustoff" to blow them out. I can't see someone crashing one. I mostly load my own cast boolits.

I got to know. Were you making sure the primer was fully seated or were you pre-flattening them before firing? Just kidding.

I loaned my RCBS hand primer to a friend who's brother got ahold of it. Fella has hair growing around his fingernails. He primed his 7 RUM brass and I swear he compressed the internal rod of the tool. He said he wanted to make sure they were seated cuz it was ah ultra mag.

That, and over 100,000+ loaded rounds...

Thats definitely a casting flaw. I literally have close to 1M cases through my two Dillon 1050s (automated with the Ammobot) and Ive never even scratched mine. Dillon builds these things like tanks!

P.S. their customer service is also top notch!

I had to return one of my Dillon 650's that was less than 2 years old, and had only loaded a few thousand rounds. The ram developed so much play that it could easily be rattled by hand. Got a new 650 replacement body in under two weeks from Dillon, so problems can happen even with the best.
I have been running Dillon Presses since the Dillon 450 was introduced in an Ad in the American Rifleman. That was a long time ago and tens of thousands of rounds through the old 450, two 550's and now two 650's.

The only thing I have hurt on my only Dillon, a 650, was a spring. The little coil spring that wraps around the ram and tensions the indexing cam broke. I ordered the small parts kit when I got the press and it had the spring. I was back up and running in minutes. I service my press every 3000rds. It gets cleaned, wiped down and relubed & greased. I use the red grease Dillon uses and straight 30wt oil on the ram. I only run deprimed & wet tumbled brass through it. No grit, dirt, primer ash, etc. It lives a pampered life even though it can take the abuse. Blue believer for life!
