Hi All....THIS 5 " M27 and 357Magnum cast bullets have been giving me fits all summer.....TODAY, it all worked out...all the hard work paid off....The cast bullets are from an ANCIENT Hensley & Gibbs #51 Hollow Point mold...the KEITH bullet for short-cylinder 357's....Lyman #2 Alloy...drop from THIS mold at 145grains and sized to .358"....the S&W M27 Dates to 1968..S298xxx...grips are Herret Jordan Trooper "made to measure" cut to my right shooting hand....MANY groups were like this one....Load was once-fired starline...cci 550...and 18grains H110...FIERCE muzzle blast but recoil was very manageable in this heavy N-frame....I owe this success to ALL here on this forum...I have gleaned a LOT of knowledge from EVERYONE here re cast bullets..loads...weapons.....THIS forum is how I managed to get THIS S&W ready for deer hunting season...THANKS AGAIN TO ALL here on this forum...!!!!

Awesome group! What distance were you shooting at? Were those off hand or from a rest?

OH JEEZ......The groups were from a solid rest at 25yards...in preparation for hunting seaon....I am(was) still testing loads for hunting season..looks like I have found a good load for hunting....we'll see...sometimes my 58year old young eyes manage to get it right...

Getting a revolver to plop them where you are looking is always a JOY !
About what size are the corn crunchers in your area ? I ask because the Deer in my Illinois area are BIG.. 180 pounds is common. I go by a basic value of 1 grain of boolit for one pound of deer. I am not saying a 145 grain boolit will not drop a "cruncher" weighing 240 pounds IF everything is PERFECT. But I have hunted long enough to want that EXTRA thump on hand. Just my personal thoughts.

The deer here in NY are NOT that big....most 2-3yr old bucks will only go 100 to 125lbs. MAX....

Geeze! Good for you and a darn nice gun to boot! Got one just like it with Maple stocks. Where in NY are ya at? Some of those farmland bucks get up there and if you get back in the woods in the mountains there are still big guys roaming around that have never seen a human.

I must correct myself. Mines a 28x4". I should read these posts better!

Gotta love those 5" Smiths. I got mine second hand 25-30 years ago. I just wish they'd make it a standard barrel length.

Regards,

Stew

Very nice group indeed sir, and the 5" mod 27 is a wonderful piece. The H&G #51 is my favorite mold for the 38/357 and would be the last to go if I had to sell my stuff(shudder).
