Can anyone tell me if the threads on a Post 64 Model 94 barrel are the same as a Pre 64 barrel? Will they interchange?

Thanks, Denver

Yes. The AE barrel will have the extractor cut in the wrong place but it can be recut where it needs to be.

As Trailblazer sez they are the same. I put a custom octogon 38-55 barrel in a commemerative action, but eventually found a pre-64 action for a good price and swapped it in and it fit just fine. Both were top ejects so didn't have that problem. It's my black powder long range rifle for CAS.

Thanks. I found a barrel for a post 64 top eject rifle in 375 Win caliber that I intend to put on a pre 64 model 94. Will only be shooting cast at velocities and pressure below 375 Win specs, so it should do no harm.

That will not work. The 375 and the rest of the Big Bores, including the 307, 356, and 444 have different threads. The standard barrel shank is .805"x20TPI and the Big Bore is .875"x28TPI. There is enough meat on the Big Bore shank to recut to fit the standard receiver but that requires lathe work.

Thanks Trailblazer, I hadn't thought of that twist. Stands to reason though in that the receivers for the BBs were also heavier. I have a lathe and can recut the threads, no problem. How about the outside dimensions of the barrel, will I need to change anything else?

The 375 top eject barrels I have seen had the same contour as the 30-30. The 307,356 and 444 have larger diameters but they were only chambered in the AE. I don't know but I suspect that the 375 AE barrels might have the larger contour also.

Other than that you should only have to deal with minor differences due to manufacturing tolerances. For example I put a 30-30 AE barrel on a post 64 top eject action. The slot in the barrel for the forend band screw is about 1/16" closer to the receiver on the AE barrel so to fit the forend I would have to shorten it by that amount.
