Oh what a difference a trigger makes!

In a previous post I posted a target from my indoor range at 25 yards. The groups on the target was various loads from my new 2018 1894C. The accuracy was okay but I thought that it could be better.

I removed the sear and worked the angle until I had a consistent 3 lb pull with no push off. Originally the trigger was 7-7.5 lbs. I tried it again today at the same distance on the same range and below are the results. Loads are listed below the target. The best load was target #6. It is a Lee 358-158-RF, sized to .358" and lubed with one light coat of BLL. This was loaded over 12.5 gr of 2400. No leading. That is 5 shots into 5/8" with three shots into the same hole. That looks like the load for me. Target #7 is also very good. This is the load with the Lee 125 gr RF. There is one called flyer in the group. I guy next to me touched off a S&W 460 that I wasn't expecting. It made me jump a little. This is also a 5 shot group.

Target and loads, all bullets sized to .358":

1. Lee 158 gr RF 10.3 gr 2400 BLL
2. RCBS 162 gr GC 12.4 gr 2400
3. RCBS 162 gr GC 12.5 gr A #9
4. 180 gr PB 8.5 gr A #7
5. 180 gr PB 9.8 gr A #9
6. Lee 158 gr RF 12.5 gr 2400 BLL 5 shot group!
7. Lee 125 gr RF 12.5 gr 2400 BLL

Disclosure: I don't believe groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 above were really representative. These loads were lubed in my RCBS LAM with a lube that has given me flyers in the past. The rest of the loads lubed with BLL are very good.

To be fair I am not naming the lube. I didn't have time to purge and re-season the bore after switching lubes so any judgements would be unfair to the manufacturers.

In future tests I will stick with one lube only.

Also, in my next range report I will shooting outside at the 100 yard berm.

With my JM Marlin 1894CS I can hit clay pigeons all day long at 100 yards. On Thursday this week I will have them both out and shooting them head to head.

My opinions of my 2018 Marlin 1894C are all positive. The more I shoot it the smoother it gets. If the long range accuracy matches my JM Marlin I will declare this rifle a winner.

That is good to hear. I am sort of looking for an 1894 remlin in .45c

I did the same sear treatment on a Glenfield 30-30 along with a lighter hammer spring. Really improved the trigger. Not at all hard to do.

Seems like most manufacturers now are litigation shy. First thing I did after my last two Rugers, Lipsey SA 44 Special Blackhawk and a Ruger GP100 5" 44 Special, was to order spring kits - Ruger SA is now down to 2.5 pounds, and the GP100 down to a consistent 3 pounds. I was used to the process when I got the GP100; bought it on a Saturday - trigger @4.5 - 5 pounds; ordered a Wilson Spring kit on the following Monday, and by Thursday had it installed (just the 8 pound trigger return spring, I did not do the hammer spring).

I was curious to the quality of the new rifles. Glad to see that. As a cowboy shooter - accuracy at close range is our last thought most times.
