So I have this garage that we use for car repair. Have been able to arrange to purchase the used wheel weights. Went and settled my account yesterday with the last pickup of the wheel weights. Called the local scrap yard to make sure I was correct on value. As of 6/23/18 the scrap yard was paying .16/lb.

Sounds like a deal but from 65 pounds sorted around 15 pounds Fe weights, 3 pounds Zn, 10 pounds of stick on and the rest were lead clip on.

Talking with the service manager yesterday he acknowledged that the days of clip on wheel weights is growing short. May not completely disappear but certainly will be few and far between in the future.

Was thinking about letting my source go but no longer, will see how long it goes. Sounds like range lead will be in the future.

You don't say if your paying .16 or more but keep in mind that you can 'dump' all the Fe and Zn for that .16 per lb so that left you with about 47 Lbs of raw lead. Not great but really not bad!

Exploit all your resources. A bunch of little bits here and there can add up to something good. Then you stumble onto the great big deal.

A friend of mine was renowned for his appetite. Folks just liked to feed him for free. It didn't matter if it was hot dogs with chips or filet mignon he told them "it was the best thing he ever put in his mouth". And he believed it too.

This is my strategy too! At least until you get to that lifetime supply level. A fellow would be wise to get it when you can. I've seen it go from free or cheap and plentiful to scarce.

To the OP, at that price I would not quit until the lead yield is much less.

As long as your paying <$.75 for the lead I'd keep buying from him. The scrap yard will pay a few cents for the ZN and FE and clips so there is no cost to dispose of them

My local scrap yard pays $.15 per pound for wheel weights and sells for $.40 per pound.

I am saving zinc now and turning it into ingots. I can make fishing weights for the local river rats or I can sell the ingots at the scrapyard for $0.90/lb (they XRF them and I bring a drill and core several to test inside purity for them). iInce I hand sort they run 99% pure... I might miss a small lead WW once in awhile. The little tiny 1/4 oz types...

Switch to Range Scrap, no need for Tin, no purchasing anything! Started Casting in 2009 using collected range scrap.
Processed using my LEE 4-20 pots (2) into 1 & 1/2 Pound ingots (2 tons in ingots at preset).
Air cooled run 10.3 Brn., Water cooled run at 14.2 Brn.
Save a bunch of cash! And, I have NO leading problem!

The scrap yard near me pays $0.11 per pound for any lead. Will NOT sell no matter what. Will NOT take Zn weights unless I have over 1k pounds. Go figure.

Thats pretty poor.....a local yard here offers around US 30c/lb for batteries, with the water in them....Have never asked about lead,as I dont want to sell...........Im told all the lead scrap/batteries go to shot makers, none is exported.....The local ranges have long term contracts with specialists who remove and process the backups every six months or so.Doubt you find a 22 after they finish.

I've been going to the same scrapyard for almost 30 years. My price on sorted WW's was never more than 25 cents/lb. (I had to do the sorting). They moved once and changed hands 4 times but always kept the same management and employees. I've been able to stash enough alloy to last into very old age. I stopped by with a load of scrap to sell and they are GONE. Building is up for lease with one business already in one of the buildings. I was flabbergasted. Still am. I had to go to one of the large yards with my load and sat in line for an hour from weigh in to pay out.

The point of all this is, GET WHAT YOU CAN WHILE YOU CAN. The folks at the old smaller yard have treated me well and I hate they're gone, not only the alloy source but the friendships I made.

Good Luck in your search. I hope it's fruitful.

I spoke with a person at a larger scrap yard last year. They said they don't sell to the public.
Just the other day I spoke with a guy at a scrap yard and he said he sells lead for a dollar a pound. Now I'm scrambling trying to find anything I can think of to scrap out for lead. I found a 5 gallon bucket full of old brass fittings at work yesterday. Gonna try to talk to the man in charge into giving it to me.

I just traded/paid for 150lbs of COWWs with a few SOWWs and a large dive weight thrown in there @ .65/lb. Looks to be a clean bucket of mostly lead alloy.
