Long time ago I picked up a Car15 that was having function problems.
Got it worked out, and haven't played with it until a few weeks ago.
Barrel was copper and carbon fouled.
Cleaned it best as possible, but not shooting as well as I think it should.
It has a short hand guard, 16" pencil barrel.
Not sure what the twist is.
I'd like to keep the pencil barrel with a 1-7 or 1-9 twist.
Looking for suggestions on a replacement barrel

Ar15 pencil barrel heat up quickly and usually group sizes grow as quickly.
If you are shooting off a bench and resting the handguard or barrel on something i would suggest you try something else first .
A freefloat handguard. rest on that only
Give some time between shots. You should see much improvement in group sizes

1-8 twist.

Start with a new barrel with a known twist rate. $80 plus shipping shouldn't set you too far back to experiment with.

http://faxonfirearms.com/16-pencil-5-56-nato-mid-length-4150-qpq/ Used by Ian and Karl of "In Range" to build their excellent "What Would Stoner Do" Carbines, fully stress relieved, will hold zero when hot. Combine with a free float hand guard. Love mine.

Good links.
Both are for mid length handguards. I want to keep it carbine length.
Trying to keep the retro look.
Not looking for great accuracy. Open sights. Under 3" at 50yds would be fine.
Barrel on it now throws them all over the place. No consistency at all.

Yeah that sounds pretty bad maybe try taking the handguards off of it and shooting a group to see if it actually is the barrel or just the handguards pushing it all over the place . It to be honest just about any decent barrel free floated or not should be able to do 1-2" groups at 50 yds.

Give Green Mountain a call maybe they can help. They made them for many makers and have a retail walk in shop under the new owner.

Lots of pencil with mid length handguard.
Can't find any carbine length handguard.
Hope to find one with the front sight ob it.
I'll keep looking.
Don't like the M4 look.

Ive had two pencil barrled ARs one a bushmaster and one a dpms sprotical. Both had no problem shooting moa with loads the liked. I free floated the dmps and it shot 3/4 inch 5 shot groups all day long with its best load. Easily as good as any of my standard weight guns.
