I just bought my first lever gun in 40 years. I decided I wanted
a Marlin 30-30 with a cut rifled barrel and have been keeping an eye
out for one. I found a Marlin Model 93 on Gunbroker that had
horrible pics on the listing but the seller convinced me over
the phone that it was really nice and had an excellent bore.
I bid an opening bid of $550 and nobody raised the ante so
that's what I got it for. Bore scope proved he was right
about the bore. Tight action. I don't think this gun has
been shot much. Can't wait to try it out.

That is a nice rifle at a nice price. A couple years ago I bought a 93 Carbine 32/40 for $350 and
was really proud of myself. Same kind of shape as OPs. Got dies and brass, loaded 20 and headed
to shoot it. My ammo had something wrong with it, back home I went. Thought I got excited and
did something wrong. After checking my loads I saw 32 Win data on next page. Plunked in a 32W
and it worked perfect. A old rechambered job. I wasn't happy and returned the rifle , wish I had
kept it now.

I've learned from some Marlin collectors that there are no official
records of production of earlier Marlin rifles. All guesses are from
inferred knowledge about these rifles. IOW, no exact dates can
be claimed, only ranges. Most of the hard core Marlin collectors
I've communicated with say that this gun was built between
1921 and 1925. The guy that listed the rifle was making his guess.
But he told me over the phone that it was just a guess from quick
reads he had made on the internet. It really didn't matter to me,
but I did search it out after I got it because I was curious.

Thanks for all the comments on this rifle ! I feel lucky to be
the current owner.

You got an excellent bargain !

AFAIK, "Marlin Firearms Corporation" marked Model 93's were made from 1921 (when the model designation was changed from Model 1893 to Model 93) to 1924 - so, unless you have a parts gun, I would put it's DOM in the early 1920's.

Nice rifle. You did well. I have one of the last Model 1893s made by Marlin before they changed the designation to Model 93. My rifle was originally in 30-30, but is now in 38-55. Brophy states Marlin changed from Model 1893 to Model 93 in 1905. According to Brophy my 1893 has an early Model 93 serial number since it has a letter prefix to it. Marlin Model 1893/Model 93 rifles/carbines are well made firearms. Just not as popular as the Winchesters.

Brophy states Marlin changed from Model 1893 to Model 93 in 1905.




FWIW, it's been proven a few times, that Brophy was sometimes in error when quoting DOM's.

I took it to the range the other day to try it out. Click. It's got a broken firing pin.

Looks like I get to learn how to do something new. :)

The 1893/ Model 93 has a two piece firing pin. Make sure all the parts are there. There also should be a spring. When the lever is fully closed the front and rear half of the firing pins are aligned.

Most 93's have good triggers for lever guns. I think your gonna really like it when you get that pin repaired :)

Yes - The Model 1893/93 has a long (.30-30, .32 Spec, .38-55) action; the Model 1894/94 are short actions for pistol length cartridges (.25-20, .32-20, .38-40, .44-40, etc)
