My 87 yr old Mom (Ronae) tripped in her apartment yesterday, She broke her right hip as well as her shoulder, when she fell flat on her right side. She couldn't move, couldn't reach her cell phone, which was close by. She was in shock, but still conscious and yelling for help, an hour passed before anyone heard her, they dialed 911 and the police got a master key to get in her apartment. She's had x-rays and scans and will hopefully see her Ortho specialist today (she's had both kness replaced 2 decades ago, as well as having her left hip replaced 2 years ago).

She needs your prayers. Thanks in advance.

these photos were from a visit in March (2018)...helping her clean the frig...

An update about my Mom

They did surgery this afternoon is on her hip. It sounds like the shoulder will not be operated on. What is going on there is a triple fracture of the humerus bone (upper arm bone) just under the "ball" of the shoulder joint, and they don't operate on that. She may be in a sling for the rest of her life. She landed on her elbow so I guess that was a compression fracture. Doc says if all goes well, she'll be out of the hospital in 3 days and into a nursing home for rehab...Not sure if she'll be able to go back to living on her own in the apartment?

I called her tonight after her Hip surgery, sounds like it went well, the doctor was coming back later to get her to stand up.

I am going up there tomorrow (3 hour drive), so I will be offline, not sure when I'll be back home?

Update,
I was with my Mom for the last two days. Her Physical Therapist and Doctor hoped she would be able to start PT right after the anesthesia wore off, but she wasn't able to do anything that day or the next, seemingly due to pain meds. Wednesday I believed they dialed the dosage back a bit and she was able to make her PT goals.

This photo was lunch, right after her first successful PT session, Out of bed and in a chair, all of which really picked up her spirits.

There is still a long way to go, but she is advancing slowly. The goal is for her to advance far enough to leave the hospital and go to Rehab (nursing home)...hopefully on Friday. They sure don't keep people in the hospital very long anymore.

The Old photo is my Dad and Mom (circa 1948).
...I had never seen this photo before. While in the hospital, My Mom needed something from her purse, she opens it and shows me this photo and says, LOOK, a 70 year old 'selfie'

I got a surprise call last night, They moved my Mom out of the hospital to Rehab, that was suppose to happen today? I guess they had an opening and that they wouldn't be able to do the transfer today? I hope she was physically ready for the move?

I really wanted to be there for the move, to help her get settled in and fetch everything she needs from her apartment. Well, whatever...I am headed out the door as I type this. I hope my worry here is unfounded.
Later.

I talked to Mom on the phone yesterday, to plan a visit with my Daughter and Granddaughter. I asked how things were going, She said some days are better than others. I asked about her walking during PT therapy, She said some days she is unable to walk, like one foot is made of lead, she can't lift it. So the PT is going slower than I thought. She still is in good spirits though.

Update:
My Mom has been in 'rehab' for a month now. There hasn't been much progress, but there has been some. They figure another 4 weeks of rehab and then a decision has to be made about her ability to care for herself in her senior apartment (which has some daytime services she hadn't needed before) or her going into assisted living facility.

Last week, my brother's family came from Detroit to visit everyone in MN. He spend 3 days with Mom and he seems a bit more positive on Mom's condition than I am...I hope he is right.

Anyway, In the next month there will be a crossroad, I fear the worst and he hopes for the best. I never really thought I was a "negative-nelly" type...I always pictured myself as more of a Boy Scout being prepared for any situation...but maybe I need a bit of enlightenment...so maybe I need some prayers, as well as Mom needing them.

Prayers for you and your Mom. Had to move Mom from her apt. to a nursing home (or whatever they call them these days) over a year ago. Once they have a bad fall, hard to tell when the next will be. In Mom's more (or less) lucid moments she wants to get dressed and go back to HER place. I tell her it isn't anymore but she can wheel her chair out to the corner and live there. Then she chuckles. It's a tough road. Note: family needs a power of attny if in a home - should have one anyway. Basically to 'step in' or oversee when needed. Even as a son I can't get doc info unless P.O.A. If in a nursing home, you must take all valuables away.
edit: most hospitals and rehab units have staff help to walk you through any possible scenarios for placement, medicare, etc. The one we dealt with was very good.

Had the same thing happen to my 85 year old mother in mid May. A month in the hospital and another 5 weeks at a rehab facility and she came home last Thursday. Luckily my dad is still in pretty good health and me and my wife live next door. But it sure does change everyone’s life. God speed to you and your mom and whole family.

Update:
Boy things can sure turn around, Thank the Lord.
Tuesday, Mom had a Dr appt where the xray'd her shoulder, there was new bone growth...a great surprise. I got the impression that wasn't likely to happen, but would be a miracle if it did.
The Dr removed the arm brace and told her to use it with moderation, but to put whatever weight needed on it, during PT using a walker, to Get the Hip replacement improved. She didn't have a lot of range of motion that day, but after a couple PT sessions, she gained quite a bit of motion.

I visited her yesterday. She is able to get out of bed by herself and into a wheel chair now...that's a big step. We met with the Nursing home Doctor, her social worker, and the PT ladies (at different times with each). The Hip has progressed remarkably well in the last week, the shoulder motion is gaining without a lot of pain, they have reduced the "Oxy" pain meds to the minimum. The Best news is that she is "likely" going to be able to return to her apartment (I had feared that wasn't going to be possible), maybe even return sooner than they originally guessed...but that's still a few weeks out.

Thanks for everyone's Prayers, I have faith that they are being heard.

Praise and Rejoice !

Mom's success (due to all the prayers sent on her behalf, no doubt)

We packed up her stuff and left Rehab (nursing home) yesterday...and moved her back into her apartment. She is feeling much better, although she is still a bit weak, I hope she does her "ordered" exercises and walks the halls of the apartment building. She does have a few home nurse visits per week for a couple reasons, but she is soooo happy to be home. I brought some fresh garden produce, since my garden is producing an abundance, she loves the garden tomatoes, Okra, cucs, bell peppers and such.

One more Update:
My Uncle (Mom's bother) and my Aunt and I went to visit my Mom today.
Long story ...my Aunt decided after a previous visit that she[my Aunt] and I needed to clean and declutter my Mom's kitchen. I attempted to do this once, before her trip-n-fall, she wouldn't let it happen. I asked Mom about doing it a month ago, when I rearranged her apartment[per the PT ladies recommendation] while Mom was still in the nursing home (to make is more 'walker' friendly). Mom said, NO..the kitchen is ok the way it is.

Today, the Lord must have answered my Aunt's prayers. Mom let us do it. First was the pantry, We removed 8 bags of out dated canned goods, way out dated. My Aunt was adamant that "all" those old cans must go. But, any that weren't too far out of date, I took home, which made my Mom's thrifty soul feel better. Then to the counter top, which was totally full of stuff, there wasn't any workspace to prepare food, I don't know how she did that before? Anyway, to make room on her counter top, we got rid of some small appliances she doesn't use, which shocked me, she always told me she might use them for this or that someday...I'm glad my Aunt was there. Other stuff on the counter just needed to be put away into a cupboard where she could reach...cleaning out the cupboards was easy, as most of the stuff she had stashed in there, she doesn't use anymore, due to Dad passing away 2 years ago.

My Mom had only been out of the apartment building once[to goto a Dr apt], since she got out of the nursing home. So my Aunt and Uncle took all of us out to dinner. My Mom was happy to get out and see the town. There had been a strong storm two days earlier, and several trees were downed, and some hadn't been cleaned up yet...She was curious to see all the damage that she had heard about from her neighbors. In one area of town, the lawns were totally covered with leaves and branches.

It was a real good day.

Thanks again for all the prayers.

Brought back memories for me . Dad was always a pack rat but quit saving everything when he got older and we cleaned all the junk out of the shed . But then mom built up a 'supply' of clean used foil plates , pickle jars , sacks , 'nice' boxes and whatever .

They had a utility/storage room the width of the house on the back and I was cleaning it out and trying to talk her into getting rid of all the foil plates , jars and junk but she wanted to keep it .
In a bit she said . Charlie go on and haul every bit of that stuff off ! It made me feel guilty because she liked it and I told her it wasn't hurting anything and she could keep it but she said ;

Charlie don't worry about it ! I'm sure I'll start another collection ………..It's just what old people do .

Jon my mother was the same way. Every Styrofoam cup and bowl wàs washed and saved, stacked in corners because she might need them. Nothing was thrown away because it might be used. I believe the depression mentality prevails in older folks.
Thank God you are the loving son you are, many older folks never see their kids because they are to busy to care for their parents.
