It's called a "pig". Was fed into linotype machines to create, well, line-o-type.

Sweet find...and pretty good price too. I've only melted finished letters/numbers (350 lbs worth)....how do you melt a pig? Do you stand it up in a big pot or do you cut it down into pieces first....just curious what your method is. I'd probably take a sawz-all to it if it were me.

Notch the triangle side woth a sawzall or angle grinder. Turn square side up and hit it with a hammer. Usually breaks at the notch.

[smilie=1: Hi Grmps.You NEVER have too much linotype lead.A friend in Fl has been amassing that stuff for quiet a while now(about 10 years)and has about 2 1/2 TONS of it.All in pigs as shown.He works for an outfit that dismantles old buildings and his boss just gives him all the lead that they come across.Just got tired of all the BS from the EPA over disposal.And that don`t include plumbers lead,COWW(new in box)and the good Lord only knows what else.I could almost learn to hate someone like that:lol:.Lucky bugger.

^^^^ and here in Florida I can't buy it. Seems all the sinker makers have the corner on the market. Scrap yard told me no way, they have a standing order for all the lead, no cherry picking...Not one Tire store has ever sold me a pound. You guys a plum lucky..

I'd say I would convert my business over to lead abatement but I hate the Government BS.

I just cut it to fit in my shelf with a band saw. Then when I need a bit for alloy I cut off what I need and add it to the pot.

Yeah, a nice score for sure. I don't use much lino but I buy all that I see. Its quickly becoming a thing of the past.

I got lucky one day and found 3 pigs for $0.85/lb so i bought all 3 from my local scrap yard. I got some other good quality soft lead and tin from them too but I need more so I'll have to go see what they got in the bin. Winter reload used up over 300 lbs of various lead, tin, lino so its time to stack up again.

Those pigs are easily broken into smaller pieces, just lay a "fulcrum" under it and smack it with a hammer. They are usually 10 kilos, which is 22 pounds.

I had a friend (Thanks John!) score me 4 pigs @ .75 per pound....now this was some time ago but I still have them. I have been using up the lino letters and spacers but about to break into the pigs stash.
I use 1lb lino to 5lbs ww for my alloy. Handguns and submachine gun loads.
I now have enough lino to do some 800 lbs of ww's.
Should last for a while, no?
