92 Winchester .32-20

Had a chance to look at my first Model 92 Winchester today in a shop near Chadds Ford, PA. Looked to be all original finish, and the action was tight and smooth. A really beautiful rifle, but beyond my means at $975. They also had a Marlin 1894 in .32-20 but it looked like the stock and metal had been re-done On it. Happy to pass on the name of the dealer by PM.

Unless you just prefer an old gun, you might look for one of the .32-20s Marlin made about twenty-five years ago. These are great cast bullet shooters, very accurate, and built on relatively strong actions. I bought one new shortly after they were introduced. Can't say the cartridge is the most useful, but no kick and little noise. It's a gun I wouldn't want to be without. I think they would be pretty reasonable in price as well.

Since that's approximately 50% of what a .32-20 M92 in that condition is worth (.38-40's & .44-40"s are worth 3x as much as that asking price), you might want to investigate using plastic fantastic (Why God invented credit cards ;) )

I currently have 2 Winchester 92 rifles in .32-20 and 2 Colt revolvers in .32-20 and love the cartridge. I'm in the process of having a baby Martini action rebuilt into a custom .32-20 as well ...

I have a 94 Marlin 32-20 made in 1901, long oct barrel .
Reading this reminds me to load a few up and go out back and plink a-while.

My local shop has a marlin 1894c in 32-20 thats like new for 550.00 and I just cant bring myself to get it. Maybe I should take a fourth look at it.

I have a .32-20 rifle with octagon barrel. about 85% out mint in side. got it at a gun show many years ago for 250. story is the bore looked like a swore pipe. the guy said it shot good said he was shooting it with factory loads. which means the bore was leaded up bad he though it was pitted that is why I got it so cheap. also have a colt p.p.s. in .32-20 to go with it.

The '92 in 32-20 is just one sweet little rifle. I had one for probably close to 30 years and just recently gave it to my oldest son along with a Colt clone in the same cartridge. Around here $975 in the condition you describe would be a steal.

I missed it by a couple of hours :groner: Then I found another for 426.00 out the door but its in ruff shape, no finish left on the wood and large rust spots on the mag tube. The barrel and action are good but I don't feel like redoing the stocks or cleaning up the rusty mag tube. I guess I'll pass and keep playing with my .45-70's

I've got a Oct barrel 1894 Marlin from early 1900s and a Win 53 from 30s? The Marlin is capable
of Sqirrels head at 40yds, with tang sight. The Win prefers the 115 gr boolits to do that well.

The most recent issue of The Fouling Shot has an expensive article by Ed Harris on loading standard pressure loads for the .32-20 Winchester for both rifle and revolver. An advantage of modern technology is that those of us who receive the e-subscription are getting it now, as we speak. 32-20 is a nice little cartridge, but has to be reloaded. Getting into it is not a big deal but it is surprising how it can add to the cost. I have a 32-20, Marlin 94, a 357 Rossi and a 22 mag Henry lever action. For me they all have the same use. The 32-20 is a great cartridge as is the 357 mag when reloading. I load the 357 Rossi with 125 grain cast at moderate velocities and the 32-20 with 120 grain cast at about the same velocities. I don't get excited about the 357 for deer as I an deer rifle poor and prefer other cartridges. For anything I use these rifles on the 22 mag works just as well.


Saying this because there are alternatives. I do not have a lot of practical use for these rifles as they are too big for rabbits and too small for deer. They will work for coyotes but I do not see a lot of them. They are fun to shoot and I carry them on my 4 wheeler and tractor. Basically I could get by with just the 22 mag. but the 32-20 and 357 were handy a while back when 22 mag ammo was not available. If you cast your own then they are also a bit less expensive to shoot. However I find the lack of need for reloading a bonus for the 22 mag.

Interesting point, Northnm, but I assume I'll be reloading anything I buy. Probably making brass, too - my last two were a 9.3x57 and a 25 Krag AI 40degree barrel for my Encore. Of course I also shoot the 32 short, a 10.5x47Rx16 2.5", an 8mmx63 (8mm-06) as well as the 32-20 and 25-20.
