This time the owner wanted a nice dark brown/golden color mountain rifle with some maple stripes thrown in. I did not go over crazy this time with the stripes. Hand rubbed genuine oil finish. The ramrod and entire stock took hours of polishing with 2000 grit sand paper. Every coat of stain that went on was allowed to dry and then whiskered with 2000 grit to remove any rough texture. She came out beautiful and the browned lock and barrel & trim just added a touch of sweetness.

Very nice! What a great looking rifle. It just shows that if you put in quality time you get quality results ...

Very nice indeed. How much does it weigh? What make barrel, and caliber?

Super nice! I love the subtle sheen on the stock finish. I can never seem to achieve that effect. Maybe I need some 2000 grit sand paper.

Yes Mac! 220- 320 - 400 - 600 - 1000 & 2000 grit. I used a water based stain and after each coat, the stock was gently polished smooth with the 2000 grit sand paper. I used birchwood casey genuine oil. Put it on super light, rub it in hard and give it over night to set up.

Interesting. When I finish with 2000 I get a mirror finish. It's a labor of love as it fills (clogs) so quickly. I rarely do it since most of my guns are hunters. I have good success de whiskering with 600 or 800 grit. But really at that point the stock should be sealed and filled and there's not much whiskers.

How did ya do the stripes? that worked really nice - maple stripes on a plain CVA hardwood stock - good job
