Had to stop at my local super wally world yesterday. Stopped by the gun ammo stuff to check on 22 price lots of 22 in the bin. Saw a notice posted saying tnat a buyer had to be at least 21 to buy ammo or guns. Has anybody else seen one of these or is it just my local wally mart.

Yep same sign at our Wally mart and they ID everyone buying it , Company policy the girl at the counter said . Yes it's not federal or state law but it's their store so their rules apply.

This same post has been coming up on different boards for several years now. Wal Mart has had this policy for years and someone finally saw the sign and thought it was something new. They've been doing it here for at least the last ten years. It has nothing to do with any recent shootings or other wise.

Seems funny all the Walmart’s around me started requiring a ID at the first of the yr. Only have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo not long gun ammo. They started the 21 yrs of age to buy any firearms or ammo after the parkland school shooting, not before. I see you are in ny. NSB. Whole nother world just like ca.

Bought some 12 gauge shells from them the other night. The lady did ask my birthdate because the check out system prompted it, but she didn't ask for an ID. I'm in my 50s and look every day of it, so wasn't surprised.

I won't buy any guns at Wal Mart, mainly because they don't carry anything that interests me, but I will continue to occasionally buy ammo from them.

Last Fall when I bought a box of bulk Federals at our local Wally World, I needed to show my drivers license. I asked the counter kid why? He replied it was policy to ask for it.Robert

The 21 requirement is coming to all stores in the US shortly. Just a fact of life these days.

As stated above, fed law 21 for handgun ammo, 18 for rifle ammo. Walmarts used to follow that, but since Parkland, 21 to buy any ammo at all, at the least the ones here in SoFla. One of my coworkers is 20 and can no longer buy his 270 Win ammo at Wally World.
And, yeah, I had to show ID as well.

Yep, pretty sad. Lawsuits have already been filed. The legal system will either resolve or make this a permanent thing.

A sign of the times . . .

When in AZ for the winter, a couple of years ago I needed to get a quart of contact cement for my leather work. Went to the local Wally World . . . looked all over for it and finally found a clerk. Asked them where it was located and was told that they no longer carried it. Why? "Because kids buy it to huff". I also needed to get a can of spry paint to do some touch up work - was surprised to see it all behind locked displays. I again asked why? "Because kids are shoplifting it to huff and "tag" buildings, etc. Too bad, butI can understand some of a store's policies when you consider how things are in today's world. How I long for the time many years ago when I could walk in to a local hardware store . . . at the ripe old age of 12 . . . plunk down my 50 cents and walk out with a bo of 22s to go squirrel hunting.

Gone are those “goode olde daze”! I still have a couple of those Western Auto brand 50 count 22LR boxes priced at $0.50 with the ammo still in them! Collectable? Just a trip down memory lane for me. A penny a round was easy to swallow back in the dark ages. But the prices today........NO WAY. I still see 10-13 cents/round at LGS’s (where prices are ALWAYS sky high for everything!).

I took the family to Myrtle Beach last week and made a run to wally world for groceries and fishing supplies. They had scopes and ammo but no firearms at all. Didn't notice an "age 21" sign on their wall but could have missed it.

Two days after the wally world store run I stopped in a lgs just north of the beach area. They had an "age 21" sign posted for firearms and ammo. Not sure if the sign came from a local ordinance, state code or owner's bow down to the screaming media. That sign should not matter much, his prices on everything were so high he should be closed within a year.

All Walmarts in California gave up their FFL to sell guns because they couldn't hire people that were smart enough to follow State and Federal laws. They didn't think our ten day waiting period applied to their friends. Background checks to buy a gun? I know him and he is ok. It was easier to give up the license then train the caliber of people they were hiring. Very few minimum wage workers have doctorate degrees.

Here in rural area the Wally wants ID for any ammo that fits a pistol. Has been that way for a long time. Way long time. So .22 rim fire fits pistol you show ID. Box of 12 gauge doesn't so no ID as long as you have a head full of gray hair.

Think it has to do with min age for pistol purchase being 21 so they card because too many clerks lack the ability to accurately tell the difference between 18 (long gun only) and 21. Frankly I can't either. Neither one looks old enough to drive when I look at them.

Sorry if it is age discrimination but older people take this stuff more seriously overall than youth, even us in our own youth would be more likely to bend the rules and drive it like we stole it than we are after a couple of decades of adult living is under our belt. Our equally foolish young friends would be more likely than our mature friends to ask us to commit a felony to "do them a favor"

I always liked to play with the WW sales clerk when asked is this ammo for a rifle or pistol? I was 60 years old. To play I would say neither it is for my sub-machine gun you better call your supervisor. :awesome:

I owned a shop at the time with an 07/SOT.

Their prices were well below what I could by from my suppliers.

Did that include shotgun shells? This is the only ammo that has ever been outside a locked case in all of the Walmarts by me. I end up in a lot of them across the US as well. I don’t recall ever seeing ammo outside of a locked case.

California law states that ammo has to be behind the counter, not available for the public to touch. Some just find it easier to lock up than to have to babysit the ammo rack. Local gun stores are not supposed to have it out, either.

Here, they started the 21 for all ammo and guns after the parkland shooting. I asked the clerk about it and he said folks complained a little, but it aint slowed things down. Still a good place for 22, and shotgun shells, and cheap pistol ammo, if one doesnt load that caliber.

Some things we get from there, but mostly we shop at a local IGA that is cheap. If they sold powder or primers... id shop more.

I have seen pictures of Walmart ammo shelves that were accessible to the public (mostly empty because this was during the great ammo shortage of 2013), but I have never seen this myself. 99% of the time, it's locked up behind the gun counter where you can't really get a good look at anything. I prefer the kind you can actually walk up to, but I rarely see those around here.

Just bought a box of 150 rounds of 9mm WWB for $27 at Wally World.

I'm 49 years old and the clerk had me not only show my ID but take it out of my wallet and hand it to him. He apologized profusely and remarked that it did absolutely no good at preventing anything, but that it was their new policy.

I still remember the insanity when I bought my first CCW pistol from a WalMart in Iowa in 1994. It was a S&W 686 4". After I paid for it, I had to have a manager escort me out of the store and hand it to me outside. I asked what kept me from taking it out of the box and putting in my holster and walking back into the store with it. Silence.

Employees walking the guns out of the store is policy at a lot of places. Dick’s and Cabelas do the same thing. Well the Cabelas by me used to. Now if it’s in a box they tape it up and you can walk out w/ it. If it’s a used gun w/ no box they have to walk it out.

Been there, done that. When I used to work retail (NEVER going back), I had to ID everyone for cigs. Even the 80 year old grandmas. They usually got a kick out of that. It was the middle aged women who had a problem with it or the idiots who decided to drive to the store without a driver's license...

There's a reason I'm never going back to retail...

Well, if people did a good old *** whooping when they caught kids that vandalize things, this would not be a problem in my books (btw. - don't do it if there is a chance you may get caught...). Add parenting back into the world and the problem of snuffing, huffing and so on would be resolved or at least minimized too. At a time where kids can do as they please without any concerns for consequences, these restrictions are probably the only way to deal with it - well not to deal with it.

this is supposed to be company wide after the Parkland school shooting

in addition, it is now a company policy to impose a mandatory 3 day wait, even on long guns, even if you have a CCW and live in a state that exempts CCW from waits, like florida.

I walked into a florida walmart a few weeks ago, I live in florida, but was a few cities south.. they had a great deal on a shotgun I wanted as a 'truck gun'. Then I heard about the 3 day wait. The 80$ in savings immediately evaporated once I mentally figured in having to drive back 3-4 days later and taking a shift off work to do so... just killed the deal for me so i passed.

There is no age limit on reloading equipment as far as I know. But Wally World does not sell components, too bad for them. Powder, and primers from Ed's Gun Shop, the rest from online.

I went through this the last time I wanted to buy a can of compressed air, the cashier asked if I was 18 I said "no". She got irate, and I ended up getting the CSM involved who explained to the dumb cashier that I was not 18 because I was clearly over 18.

Here on the southside of Hotlanta where us old white guys are a distinct minority, at the local Wally Worlds the spray cans of paint are now also in the same type of locked glass cases as all ammo except shotgun. The 2 1/2" .410 shells that are sold for revolvers are also locked up. I guess they don't realize that the 3" .410 on the open shelves fit some of the multi-caliber revolvers. I just returned from a trip to far NE Georgia and the spray paint cans are on open shelves there, but ammo is treated the same way. GF

Last gun I bought in Dundee mich cabellas had to be in a case before it left the store. Also a lock was required with it. I had brought a hard case but this policy effectively doubled what I had to carry as the box and cased gun both. I explained Ohio law recognized the shipping box as a case and being from Ohio that's what I had to comply with. Some of these policies increase their sales more than anything. Bought a rifle spur of the moment now need a case and lock to take it from store?????

As a side note The rifle was a 34" barreled sharps long range and I doubt they had a case for sale it would have fit in length wise.

I just started seeing the 21yr old to buy ammo signs at the Walmart’s around here.
I haven’t bought ammo from them in a few years but always look to see what is in stock.
Meijer just opened up a store here, same policy.
While I know the policies may have changed due to the current political climate there is also the stupidity of the law.
How can a company decide what ammo is pistol vs rifle ammo when there is no real distinction.
When buying 22s’ at Walmart and asked are these for a ‘rifle or handgun’ I always answered ‘yes’.
How am I supposed to know what firearm this ammo would be shot in?
When I can be at the range shooting an ar rifle, 16” barrel, .223 cal, then pull the stock off and now it is a pistol(no it was not built as a rifle originally, so this is legal), what do we call the ammo?
My local club just ran into this, new rules rifles are not allowed at the pistol range unless 22 or pistol caliber.
I saw that and just laughed.
Talking with one of the board members who was complaining about people not following the rules(which is a huge problem there) he complained that he still finds 223 on the pistol range.
I told him they had forgotten about things like an ar pistol in .223/5.56.
And that I have shot mine on the pistol range before and that it would still meet the rules as they are written.
He just got that look on his face and went ‘oh’.

Not even sure why they changed this rule, out of all the problems we have I never heard of an issue with caliber/firearm type on the pistol range.
Given the quality of many shooters I see I could make a case that many of them would be safer on a 25yd range.
I liked using the pistol range for cqb drills, set up multiple targets on the berm, a barricade or two to shoot from.
Pop out from behind the barricade, engage multiple targets, take cover, reload, then shoot from the other side. Shooting on the move, holster work from close to the berm in front of the standard firing line, all the skills like that.

Which is allowed at this range, as long as it doesn’t interfere with other shooters.
As soon as other members show up it becomes a common firing line again at 25yds.
Basically use common sense and be safe and you could do what you wanted.

Actually this topic did come up years ago, and the board couldn’t understand why anybody would want to shoot a rifle at 25yds. Funny thing is the ‘Rifleman’ had a cover story about close range drills with an AR that month that I pointed out to them.
Subject was dropped.

So I don’t like the stores policy, but given the vagueness of the law, how can they follow it if there is no legal definition of rifle vs pistol ammo?

There’s all kinds of idiocy at the clerk and store policy level. I wanted to buy a Red Rider at Tractor Supply. I was in about 60 at the time. Clerk wanted to see my ID to buy a BB gun. I said, “Nope, that’s not the law and I comply with the law. I’ll buy it somewhere that doesn’t have a stupid policy.

At Wally World if you buy a muzzle loader from the gun counter they will walk you out with it. I thought it was kind of stupid for two reasons. One, I had a legally carried handgun in my pocket at the time. The other stupidity about it was that the gun I bought was just a black powder rifle with no accessories. You could buy a blister packed black powder rifle without talking to a clerk by picking it up off of the pegboard and carrying it to the checkout yourself- complete with percussion caps, bullets and propellant pellets.

I feel for the shooters in California. Only solution is to leave the state.

Most Wal marts that have stopped selling guns is do to them not being able to hire someone that is able to take care of the paperwork needed to be an FFL. [fines can be determined by a court to the company's gross earnings]

Selling ammo needs no federal license since 1986 , no license, record keeping or anything needed. PERIOD

Still today follow federal law as in no under 21 for hand gun ammo you are legal.

All the rest is state or the seller.

Handgun ammo that fits rifles only requires asking is this for a rifle or a handgun then proceed from the answer, rifle 18, hand gun 21.

I've only been in 2 Walmart's. They built one over in what's referred to as a Los Angeles City strip. These are small pieces of County land bordered by either Independent Cities within LA County boundries, or annexed by the City of LA. Just because they could. They don't allow Guns or Ammo to be sold in any Walmart's within LA City limits. or in Unincorporated sections of LA County. They also built one in my CITY of Torrance. It's small but does sell ammo. I went in once looking for ammo last year. Couldn't buy any, they couldn't find anyone who had a key to the ammo cage. I went over to the over walmart in the LA strip. they don't carry ammo, even though the website said they had 17 buckets of REMINGTON 1400RDS of Golden bullets in stock. So much for my 2 trips to walmart.

There is only one Gun store left in the city of los angeles. It's been there 40yrs, you have to be fingerprinted and have LAPD run a background check on you to work there.

And yea every place in CA that sells spray paint has to keep it locked up. We can't even make Ed's RED, no odorless mineral spirits allowed. And you can't buy it mail order either.

And it's now against the STATE LAW to bring ammo into CA from another state. So no mail order or trips to gunshows in AZ or NV.

As of January 1st, we'll all have to pay for a Ammo Purchaser's Card, get fingerprinted and background checks. Less then 6 months to go and they still have no idea how to do it.

The State Supreme Court upheld the Law about "microstamping". Doesn't matter if the technology exists to do it or not, it's the LAW.

No 4th GEN Glocks, Ruger has only one semi-auto they can still sell in the state of CA.

I've been working at wally world part time since the local gun store I worked at closed a couple years ago. The "no ammo or guns unless 21" went into effect as a chain policy a couple months ago (stores in some areas may have been doing it already, the corporate lawyers prefer to err on the side of caution if they think a state or local law may require additional restrictions). The policy, like that of several other chain stores, was a response to the highly publicized school shootings and the "something must be done!" mindset and really is pointless in my opinion.

Wally world stores in this area has always carried a reasonable selection of basic target and hunting ammo and been cheaper than most of their competition (I know that our first gun shop had a hard time competing with their target ammo prices, had to constantly seek specials from wholesalers or sell off brand ammo such as PPU because the constant refrain was "Wally has Winchester at this price or Federal at this price"). Really this new policy has just cost them sales and annoyed people who did buy from them but I doubt it's enough to affect a company of their size and there are few small, independent stores around here to compete with them (and from my personal experience to be constantly told "your price is too high, why can't you sell me that gun or ammo at the same price or cheaper than they do"). Too many big box stores and people who just want cheap and don't care about anything else.
