I have just purchased a can of alliant 2400 to use in a 22 hornet but have found conflicting load data has the powder been changed ?

I own five reloading manuals and each gives diffrent load data for 40 gr jacketed bullets
the alliant reloaders guide lists 7.5 gr as a max load
nick harvey reloading manual 6th edition lists 8.9gr as a starting load and 11gr as maxload

I don't think that it has changed lately. I know that over the years it is a little faster than it use to be. I shoot 7.8 grs with a 55 gr fmj and have had no pressure signs or extraction problems in a T/C Contender and haven't lost any cases due to cracks or splits . I know of several guys that have gotten short case life with "HOT" loads as we shoot a lot of them in I.H.M.S.A . I hope this helps some James

Hercules 2400 was (IMO) a good bit slower than what Alliant now sells as 2400. I'd start with the lower #s and work toward the higher ones. You're not likely to leave enough air space in a 22 hornet even at the low end charges to have problems with SEE I wouldn't think and that's the safest course of action when data conflicts.

2400 has been changed a little from the old Herc powder.
Alliant has a web site with new data, you might check there.

2400 has not changed. However .22 hornet cases have. The new cases are considerably thicker than the older cases. Hence the internal capacity is less. The amount of difference would not be to noticeable with an '06 size case but it is very noticeable with Hornet cases. For example; with old W-W cases a favorite load was 11.9 gr of H4227. It was 100% loading capacity to the base of a Sierra 40 gr .224 Hornet bullet seated to 1.74. That same load in new W-W cases fills the case to the case mouth and I now use 11.4 gr H4227 in new W-W cases. R-P cases have thickened up also.
