I needed to fireform some 6mm Remington brass to 257 Roberts, so I loaded up 49 rounds (screwed 1 case up) with 2400 and shot 4 foulers and then 3 15 round groups @ 100 yards. 14.5 gr of 2400 was 2.309" with 14 in 1.551, 15 gr of 2400 was 1.801 with 14 in 1.720" and 15.5 gr of 24 was 1.594 with 14 in 1.171". There was no cleaning between the groups.......I'll neck size these cases and retry.220421

Please continue with load development for cast loads in the Roberts. I have a Ruger Hawkeye Roberts and a few 100 gr. gas check bullets that I need to start on. I'd like to know where your project leads.

Thanks

Tried some neck sized cases last evening....results as follows for 10 shot groups @ 100 yards
Group 1......14.5 gr of 2400...…...1.584" with 9 in 1.026"

Group 2......15.0 gr of 2400...…...1.368" with 9 in .877"

Group 3.....15.5 gr of 2400...…...1.308" with 9 in .995"

Group 4....16.0 gr of 2400...…...1.572" with 9 in 1.353"

Next will concentrate on the 15 and 15.5 loads, paying more attention to quality control and bench technique.

Just out of curiosity, is "the flyer" your first shot in each group? JW

I'm interested. What alloy and lube are you using?

I've got an old Savage in 257 Rob Ackley Improved that I've been tinkering with. I can get about 10 shots sub-moa but then it opens up to ~2"groups after that. It does this consistently. That's with a 257312GC (93grs), the old Lyman lube, and probably an alloy that's too soft (2:1 COWW to soft lead, water quenched). Shooting more or less the same load (15'ish grs Alliant 2400 at 1800-1950fps).

I also have a NOE 260-116RN that I haven't used much--only tried a surplus powder similar to SR4759, and it shot inside an inch at 50.

We also have an old Rem 722 in 257Rob that I need to get up to speed.

Is your barrel getting hot around shot #10 ? Hot barrels can mess with lube.

I'm using LBT blue lube that I have to apply using a heated sizer. NOE specs the mold with wheel weights @ 122 grains, my alloy casts @ 118 grains.

Mike, thanks for the response

The last round I went with it was in March with temps between 35 and 40F (I think that's around 7C). 5 shots and then a long slow trudge through the knee deep snow that was still hanging around. The barrel was only running around 100F (50-55C? I'm trying to do the math in my head). AND I got the same results--one good, tight 5 rd group inside a minute, and then three at 2-3 minutes--with PC'd GC bullets, on 3 different days. 20-25rds, then cleaned the barrel each time I got home.

I need to do better at keeping data--I was getting much more consistent results a year or two back with lubed GC bullets. I need to reset, go to a stiffer alloy and a good rifle bullet lube and start over I guess.

Finally got the 257 Roberts back to the range today. I'm using 6mm Rem brass from Hornady reformed to 257 with a .002" shoulder bump, the NOE 260-122-FN-AN2 @118 grains sized to .258". I shot 2 10 shot groups in twitchy winds...…...First group was 1.492" with 9 in 1.142", Second group was 1.272" with 9 in .798" Load was 15.5 grains of 2400 using WLP primer. Range was 100 yards.

I did check that, but there is a PB version also. I'm wanting to know which one was used in this testing.
Thanks anyway....

May have to PM Herb and see if he still around? He not been on lately. But sometime people need a break. Only takes one smart mouth or someone saying doing something and makes it no fun being online. I've always been interested in the 25 cal nice white tail gun.
