Volume 1, Issue 1, March 1960. 57 years and counting.
The beginning of Shooting Times.
The newspaper format lasted about 3 years, I would have to count the issues and I forgot to do that, before it changed to the typical magazine format.

I remember one of the first issues of ST having a photo of Clint Eastwood and Peter Brown (Lawman deputy) perusing merchandise on a table at a gunshow somewhere in CA.

My favorite magazine back in the 70’s with Skelton, Milek, etc.

I loved Skeeter Skeltons stories about the kids (Joe and me, or something like that) growing up during the depression and the trouble they could get into, all somehow involving shooting and guns. And then there was his "buddy," Jughead Johnson.

Really liked graham burnside on cartridges --
The newsprint is getting a mite brittle -- Probably should pass them on --

I love those old Shooting Times. I have them back into the 60s. Alot of them had old gun diagrams in them.

True. Sadly, times have changed.

The 60s-70s were the peak time to be a gun hobbyist; lots of mail order companies with hard to find gunsmithing tools and chemicals for blueing and stock finishing, several makers of semi-finished and semi-inletted stocks for dozens of rifles and shotguns, wildcatting was popular and surplus military guns were readily available at rational prices to work on. And there was a near steady stream of magazine articles explaining how to do our own work.

Then the "liberals" sorta took over the reins of government. They passed the 1968 Omnibus Crime bill. It's massive anti-gun regulations eventually put many small time gun dealers out of business and basically stopped home and small shop 'smith work. But, as expected, it didn't do a damp thing to reduce crime. Nor did the libs learn a damp thing so they still scream for tighter controls.

All that pleasant firearms history has been gone for so long that today's young shooters can hardly understand how far American society has degenerated. Today, gun magazines only have a tiny market and no authoritative authors even approaching the stature and knowledge of the old guys.

Alas, America has been greatly diminished ... all for our own good of course ... at least that's what the dominate liberal politicians say. I say guns only have two mortal enemies: rust and Dimmicrats. (I thank God every night for Trump and the constantly attacked liberty loving American people who agree with and support him.)

Gun magazines are basicly catalogs. The older mags had more how to articles.

Times have changed . I used to be a faithful reader but since Skeeter Skelton and Bob Milek have passed I seldom look at it or Guns & Ammo . Skelton was good for alot of stories and other stuff and Milek was the expert on tuning and shooting the Contender . I have kept many issues of their articles for reference . Most of the magazines today report on the black guns and 9 mm's . I'm sick of it . About the only thing I read now is Handloader , Rifle , and it 's Varmint issue plus the American Rifleman to keep up on the political end .
