My approach to deer and turkey is to only hunt the dumb ones. I realized years ago it is way to much work to go after the smart ones. So I just sleep in the woods and wait for something to get close enough to wake me up. This fellow made that mistake yesterday morning. 15 yard shot with 1 3/8 oz of chilled 6-shot from my 12ga. First bird with a shotshell that I loaded!

That's too funny. I got mine this year while sleeping too. A bird came in gobbling, most likely the one I shot, about 8am. It saw my decoys and gobbled like mad, but wouldn't give me a clear shot. As it was walking away I called, and that only seemed to spook it. Eventually I fell asleep while reading sixguns by Elmer Keith. For reasons I still haven't figured out, I woke up, and looked to my left. There was a turkey just standing there. I grabbed my gun, and by that time he was only 15 yards away and closing. He never made a peep, just the sound of his walking through the snow. Yes, we still had plenty of snow on the ground a couple weeks ago. Biggest turkey I ever shot too, at 22 pounds 12 ounces. If you liked your homemade shells, try some with blackpowder. I've been using a TK2000 muzzleloader. I just love seeing the fire and smoke, and the 20 second wait to know what happened. I've been shooting 1 3/4 oz of #5, but 80 grains of FFg, nitro card and fiber card, and 1 3/8 or 1 1/2 oz of #6 would be sweet in a shotshell.

The really good news is that you woke up. But the real lesson is that a quick nap is a good thing, as most awake people call too much anyway! Nice job Tom!

Very nice...how could you not take a nap on a day like that. I'll bet the sun felt good on your face too. I'll have to try sleep-hunting too. Although...I'm getting to the age where I can't help it. :)

Congrats.

Nice story. Even the smart ones do dumb things sometimes. About the only criteria I have is not to shoot young critters unless they are pests. I hate seeing fawns and spike bucks shot. Anyway...

My buddy shot a nice 22 pounder bird this weekend and he nearly died laughing. The tom was humping one of his decoys but he let him finish his job before he popped him. There were a few pellets in the decoy too!

Some years back I was deer hunting and before sun up took a seat on a stump with two trees behind it. Rainy and close to freezing. Sat for some time and must have dozed off. When I woke, bill of my hat was of course down and there were 4 front hooves almost on my toes and I could see the breath from them as they made very silent grunts. I took the 30-30 off half cock, slowly began raising my head and when eyes met, they just turned and walked away. I could've shot one but at that but angle and being awestruck kept me from firing. I do snore quite a bit. They were young and obviously curious. Now I agree sleep hunting could be a real winner!

Has turned out to be my most successful method too!

I love to snooze when woods hunting. Some of the most peaceful rest I ever get. The right clothing makes a difference. Waking up to game is always a plus.

At my age I consider just waking up to be a plus!

This method should not be used for brown bear.

I prefer my wild turkey in a bottle and I'll hunt turkeys in the frozen food isle. Both taste much better than those wild birds! I do enjoy sleep hunting more than hunting itself!. Jay

True, but Krogers will not let me bring a shotgun into the frozen food section.
