Completely jealous today, was garage sale browsing with my bro in law and he found and bought a 1970s Japanese BLR... Factory original 358 win. What a beautiful little beast it is. Anyone have any recommendations as to what we should feed it ? I will try to get some pictures later.

It came with a mag, didn't it? Otherwise, be prepared to spend over $200 for one!

RCBS 200 RNFP over IMR 3031 sized .358" was stellar in my .358. Full tilt loads will let you know you are shooting a powerful gun. Enjoy a perfect cartridge.

Yes it came with one mag. I am a big fan of the 358 ...figure in a slick lever it is about the perfect loafing around gun here in Alaska .. not the ultimate bear gun but still pretty potent .... And fast.

I like the RCBS 35-200-FN and IMR 4895 in mine. Very accurate, and kills like lightning.

.

The one I once had shot just about anything I put through it, with very good accuracy - but I had added a WGRS peepsight, meant for the BAR, on it.

Try a 225 SBT Sierra bullet traveling 2400 to 2500fps with your favorite powder. This bullet was made for the .358Win to give it range and penetration.

This is what i shoot from my BLR, it's as accurate and deadly as i can ask for. The elk don't care for it much though.

I shot a hog with this bullet from my BLR. It made an end-to-end passage and kept on going, leaving a tremendous wound channel. They are very accurate too. For this bullet I'm using H4895 and running them at 2400 fps. My load is 1/2 grain below the max on the Hodgdon web site.

Mine is fond of the 200gr Hornady PtSpt over 48.0gr H4895. Seat bullets out to 2.820”.
Mine has a surprisingly long throat. Seating bullets out significantly improved accuracy.

It shoots the 200gr RCBS .358” FNGC well loaded over 34.5gr H4895 or 39.0gr BLC2.
However, I use the Marlin M336A as a dedicated cast bullet gun, so the BLR only gets jacketed.

BTW, I’ve got 3 mags! Original owner bought them at a hardware store going out of business back in 80’s. $30 when they were sellig for $60.

Nosler also has both 225 and 200gr Accubond bullets in .358” but they are like hens teeth. Typically “out of stock, no back orders” at most vendors.

The plastic tipped Nosler bullets are so pointy that the loaded rounds cannot be ejected. If you seat them deeper the ogive goes into the neck.
The Sierra 225 and Hornady 200 grn bullets are much more satisfactory. The full power 250 grain loads are more punishing than my M70 in .375 H&H with 270 grain bullets.

Nosler I supposed to make a run of the .358 accubonds any time now. I emailed them in December, and they said the spring. I'm not holding my breath though.

You could just about trade the three mags for a nice BLR-81! They easily fetch $200.00 each on Fleabay. I have a 90's example in .308. Haven't shot it much 'cause the .30-30's keep hogging all the range time. I am planning to develop a nice 170 grain boolit load for it.
