My son owns a Mosin Nagant rifle and wants to reload for it for fun. I purchased a Lee loader for him. He was going to buy a box of boxer primed ammo to get some reloadable brass, but it’s expensive especially when you add S&H. Instead, I just ordered him a bag of 50 PRVI PARTIZAN cases.

Is there a good source of cheap .311 FMJ bullets?

I wonder if he’ll have to full size the brass somehow before it will chamber?

I know that there’s cheap surplus ammo out there that is probably less expensive than reloading , but it’s the fun factor we’re looking for, plus being able to create custom loads and not have to deal with corrosive primers.

Any thoughts about all of this would be appreciated.

Randy

For cast contact Castingmachine. A vendor sponsor of this sight. Shop around for bracketed. Graf & sons, Midway, natches etc.

I might suggest you slug the barrel befor you purchase bullets. The MN is a battle rifle manufactureed by various factories under various conditions, so it's a good idea to know for sure what the barrel measures. But having said that, .311" bullets will prolly work OK. Start here and shop for the best deal (don't forger shipping and handling)...http://www.gunbot.net/reloading/bullets/303cal/

It's a good idea to size new cartridge cases before use, but not absolutely necessary.

My Mosin Nagant needs .314 Cast Boolits, but the Hornady .312 150gr jacketed shoot very well in it.

Keep an eye on RMR bullets too. They get them occasionally.

These are the ones I like in my Moisen Nagant rifles: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/222507/hornady-interlock-bullets-303-caliber-and-77mm-japanese-312-diameter-174-grain-round-nose-box-of-100

these are much heavier than those little tiny 150 grainers and kill deer much deader than those others will. And they shoot really well in my 303 British, 7.7 Jap and Argentine Mauser's also.
