Just found this old mold the other day and am quite confused what it could be for. When cast from ww/Pb, 50/50, it has a driving band of .430-.431", but a base of .417". These weigh in at 257 grains and are very round (better than some of my modern molds). Overall length is 0.842". I bought this thinking I might be able to use it in a 44 Mag, but I would not think that the small base would do very well at all. Any ideas what this is for?

Looks to be a heel seated bullet for on of the 44 rimfires

I have a few molds with smaller shanks than bodies, After looking at the photos again, I assume you mean the bottom driving band is .417?

Yes, that is exactly what I meant. Sorry for the confusion.

If this boolit would work in a 44 Evans... I would be extremely interested in trying a few out.

It's been a long time since I've seen one, but the bullets in the pic resemble a bullet that used a zinc washer attached to the base of the bullet. The washers were slipped over the protrusion on the base and "crimped/riveted" on. But like I said, it's been a long time and I might have a few of the washers some where...

mdl the molds were Harvey Protex and the zinc washers have been un obtanium for years. I don't believe they had an integral handle though.

You can still get the washers.

I do not believe the above mold was for the zinc proto-X design. I would be tempted to turn it into a plain base.

it is for ,44 cal. cap and ball pistols. the reduced shank is for starting it stright ib the cylinder.

257 grains out of 50/50 seems awful heavy for a cap and ball to me..

Probably a bit long as well but I only shoot balls in my C&B revolvers. A boolit this long would leave little room for powder.

My rifle PB boolits have a similar base - the short 'shank' allows a perfect base 'edge'. They shoot good. Gee, thought I did something new. Guess not.
