I had a left over Badger barrel from my C. Sharps Hi Wall in 38-55, when I re did it in 38-50 Remington after I got a chance to buy a John King barrel set up for the Hi Wall. Decided as I'd never had a Roller, that maybe puting one together with the left over barrel might be the ticket. Kept watching the auction sites, gun stores and shows, and finally came across I pretty good No. 5 in 7MM that I bought for $400. Sent the action and barrel to John King last August and set about waiting. John threaded and chambered the barrel, square brigded the action, sporterized the hammer, worked on the trigger, flattened the sides of the action and made a forearm retaining block for it for the grand total of $470. For an ugly old Roller it turned out pretty good. Finally got it back in June or early July and began putting a Treebone stock set on it. Just applied the last coating of Birchwood Casey Tru-oil last night and put the stock on today. Also drilled and tapped for the Browning Tang sight that I'd bought years ago (got a new base for the Roller from Advance Engineering), and now it's ready to shoot. Will load up some stuff right soon and try it out. Here's a couple pictures of it.

My wood working is the worst part of the whole thing, but if I can't beat it with a ball peen hammer, I don't do too good. I bought a Treebone metal butt plate for it, but couldn't see myself doing a good job on the curve it requires for putting it on, so opted not to do it for now. Had a nice looking leather pad set up I'd got from Brownells a while back, so just put it on. Hope it's not too much on an eyesore.

..................Looks very pretty from where I am :-). The metalwork looks first rate. If it shoots as good as it looks ou'll be in the ribbons.

Very nice looking rifle. There is nothing like saying "I built it", to me that makes it way ahead of a production rifle.

I know it will shoot, but good luck,

John

Woodwork doesn't look too bad. All in all a nice looking piece.

A very nice looking project.

What is a "sporterized hammer"?

Very nice. I've been wanting a 'roller" since I got hooked on "Holy Black"
I'm jealous

Thanks all for the kind words, makes sweating over the wood working worth it. Just loaded up some black powder loads for it this a.m. so hope to shoot it pretty soon. Mtnman, Remington made the Rolling block in both the military versions and a sporting rifle version for both hunting and competition shooting like Creedmore. The sporting type had a nicer hammer on them, with more graceful lines and it just looked better. King and probably most of the custom single shot gunsmiths can convert the military hammer to this configuration when they do a rifle. Thanks again guys.
