I decided to get camo'ed out for deer season this year. I always figured camo was designed more to fool hunters into buying it than it was to fool game. I want to kill a good buck this year so I thought I would give it a try. We got the stuff and it stinks so we have wash it. In trying to find a UV brightener free detergent I discovered that the camo probably already has UV brighteners in it. The general recommendation is to use the UV killer made by Atsko on it.

The Atsko product isn't locally available and we are leaving this weekend to go hunting. Are there any common chemicals that can be used to treat fabric to cover the UV brighteners in the fabric?

I use Tide unscented. On strictly hunting clothes, especially outerwear, I use NO detergent at all. The warm wash cycle + the cold rinse cycle gets them plenty clean.

Dogs roll in carrion to mask their scent........ (or at least it should also have that effect, whatever reason the dog might have)

Soak your camo clothes in Doe-In-Heat then sit on the edge of a treeline and shoot the buck you like best.
It's up to you to decide if you like him best because of his looks...or his breeding technique.

It depends on my mood and what I am hunting. If I am going out to bust a couple of does for the freezer then it is denim jeans and a flannel shirt. If I am hunting that Boon and Crockett monster buck, then it is my mossy oak cammo, hand washed in homemade lye soap. No scent, no UV brighteners, and no fuss. If you don't have lye soap a bar of plain old Ivory works well also. Do not put in the dryer, as the residuals of all of the smell goodies and brighteners can contaminate your hunting clothes. Let drip dry on an out door clothes line, and then store them in a plastic bag containing a few leaves of the type found in the area in which you hunt.

Best Wishes form the Boer Ranch

That stuff is worthless. I drank two bottles last season and never saw a thing.

Baking Soda... no UV brightners.. cleans and descents and is oderless. Then bag your outer hunting clothes in a non Scented garbage bad that has either woods or field dirt (where you hunt) or leaves (I use culled apples) in the bag. I also bag all my hunting clothes and boots so they do not pick up my basement oders... When I leave my vehicle I rub down my outer garments with cut apples..

Oh, YEAH? Lemme tell you what's REALLY worthless.

You know those Deer Alert things that come two to a card, and you stick 'em on your bumber? THOSE are worthless!

I put two new ones on my pickup, and parked on the side of the road right NEXT TO a deer crossing sign.

After eight hours, eleven deer had crossed in front of me, and those Deer Alert things NEVER MADE A SOUND!!!

Deer Alert Things ! Well I know for a fact they do work. My father-in -law bought some and left them in his trunk and a nice buck alertly ran smack into the side of his Cadilac !

IMHO UV killers are a waste of money. Just another way to separate you and your money. There is no hard data that it makes any difference.

I've found anytype of clothing works using the wind in your favour and being still will get game close to you everytime. Last year I got a Bobcat that got within 5 feet of me before I moved thinking I did not want this animal in my lap. He then went out about 15yds. and turned to look back at me. I was very still, and still he did not see me. Shot him and he now sits on my wall. Even though I raised my rifle and made him turn, he actually did not see me at all. All he saw was something move in a pine top. This in plain clothes after work.

I'm not sure that would work, my dog rolls in cow patties all the time and as far as I know she's never killed a deer.

I do 90% of my warm weather (I.E over 35degrees) deer hunting in a set of red pinstiped grey mechanics coveralls...I outkill all my buds who invest many many dollars on all that other fancy duds and stuff. I have even had to clear my throat to get humans to see me up in da tree...it works folks...and i wash them in good ol granular tide. All that other crap is simply there to make your wallet lighter. But if you wanna make your clothes less bright anyway you could try leaving them in front of the television tuned to CNN or some other libtard news network...seems to work on sheeple, maybe it will work on clothes also.

I have been using Arm & Hammer Baking Soda to wash my hunting clothes in for years and years. It works and you aren't adding brighteners!! I mix up the baking soda and water for a spray on odor neutralizer as well.

I am doing my own research here. I am spending some of the money I saved by not paying for cable TV on hunting clothing! Really just trying to tone the wife down. She goes out in bright white clothes which always kind of bothered me. Yes, we kill deer anyway but I am getting older and weaker and am looking for a little edge so I can save a little energy and keep doing this longer. The UV killer will have to wait because we are leaving in the morning for the next week if need be. Probably be back sooner.

The best day of duck hunting I ever had I was wearing a red plaid shirt and a yellow hat. According to the "experts" I never should have seen a duck, much less had a great day. But by being still and being in the RIGHT PLACE at the right time I got a great day of hunting in.

Just my opinion and worth that much.

I think my dad and grand father are smileing at these comments. Both raised in the north woods. Grandpa always said "If all the deer I have killed were put together they would be nose to tail and side by side packed tightly in a 40 acre field 2 stories high". Would a Texas Ranger lie about that? Neither one ever new or used camo or other stuff. :drinks:

My wife really likes her new camo!
http://www.hunt101.com/data/504/medium/IM0004091.JPG

I am kinda disgusted with myself because I misjudged the range on a good buck and shot over him.

We think the camo makes a difference. With regular clothes we were spooking deer clear across canyons. With the camo they would look at us if they saw us move but other than that they ignored us.

I buy UV killer in December every year when it goes on sale after deer season. Wally World or Pamida usually close this stuff out at give away prices and it ends up being cheaper than laundry detergent. I really think it helps, along with scent control sprays. In our area it's getting harder and harder to kill deer every year. With the farms being sold for recreation in small plots. Everyone hunts from tree stands, not wanting to chase deer off their little patch of the world. Combine that with all the posted land around. We get no deer movement at all anymore. Seems you need every little advantage you can get. RD

I have many times been on my way home from work, smelling like hydraulic fluid, deisel and whatever else you can smell like after working all day on a concrete pump. Stop to hunt and taken a deer. Nothing but my dirty, greasy work clothes

A buddy of mine works in a place that makes extracts from things like rosemary leaves, vanilla beans, clove leaves, & black pepper corns. He leaves that place stinking to high heaven all the time. He's also one of the most productive hunters that I know. I was thinking about asking him to grab me a sample bottle of rosemary oil sometime to throw in my laundry so that I could see if that is what makes the difference for him or not.

What are UV's and why do you want to kill them?

Those golf cart like ATV that buzz around the woods and scare all the deer. An arrow in each tire usually puts them out of commission for a while.

Was wondering if I was the only one! I hunted for 40 years before cammo was developed. Now the deer might be more intelegent due to "Eveloution" as they are tougher as it takes a 300 Win Mag to kill them and they use to die with a 30-30.
Dirt is cheap! where I hunt there is a windmill with a horse tank the deer and hogs use for water as it is the only water unless it has been wet. Take some of the black mud from the overflow area rub it on your boots and britches and not a deer going to smell you they will think you belong.
You can collect a deer easy just find a two lane Farm to Market in the eastern Panhandle after dark speed up to 60-70 mph and more than lickley you will collect one or more pretty fast, might even get a couple of hogs. Will not make you insurance co. happy , but !

Jim,

If they make anise oil ask him for that. Supposedly anise oil attracts deer.

Grated Ivory soap plus washing soda. (Washing soda is different from baking soda.) Don't use too much soap; it doesn't take much.

you guys are confusing ultra violet light with scent control, camo patterns (especially blinds) are made almost completely in China withl uv brightners added to enhance the pattern. smear berries, step cow pies it wont matter if you are glowing like a Christmas tree. Cant wash the brightners out either gotta use uv killer

I believe I read somewhere that the normal clothes washing detergents have the UV enhancers in them.
