Hey guys I have a 7.62x54 mosin. I loaded up some 130 gr jacketed bullets with 62 gr black powder to try out. Ten rounds is all. I was going to test them but got to thinking I better ask if that is safe to do before I try it. I was going to use cast boolits but noticed my lee die set doesn't have a neck expander. I had some over sized jacketed swaged bullets I made .309. I figured I would use them up. I made some home brew powder that works good in my 45 colt. Is this a safe thing to try? I measured the powder by volume.

I can't imagine there's any pressure issues. Accuracy might be a pipe dream.

303 brit and 8mm guedes were originally loaded with black and jacketed.
and shot dirty.
not sure if that is relevent here.
keep safe,
bruce.

If you were using a factory made powder and as long as the bullet base is in firm contact with the powder charge yes it would be safe. With your "home brew" stuff, you're the only one that can determine whether it's safe or not.

Using home brewed powder; approximately what granulation is it? Black powder (someone correct me if I'm wrong) burn speed is largely controlled by granulation size. The same amount of powder in 1F and 4F could give vastly different results. You might consider asking this question in the Black Powder Cartridge section.

No way you can get any amount of BP of any granulation up to smokeless pressures (3900bar~56kpsi for the 7,62x54R).
So you're safe there.
But as stated it will run dirty and the type of rifling in the MN are not made for BP so consider it a smoothbore after the 10 rounds.

On that note: My 1911 runs just fine on 16grains of 4f behind a 230grain FMJ :-)
8 shots and accuracy is gone.

I just might try it. I asked because i didnt know that if doing this would be a no no.Im going to order a neck expander so i can use cast bullets.

Cast or jacketed doesnt matter much, lube and lots of it does.
More than 99% of smokeless goes into gasses, with BP thats only 1/3.
So from 60 grains of black you're going to make 40grains of ashes, and that needs attetion.

Do it for fun and giggles.
It will mess them up at the range ;-)

Just remember to clean good after use.

And clean good with soapy water to get the BP fouling out. .309 bullet in a .311 bore? Don't expect obduration - or accuracy!
