Heat transfer to lube sizer

So I have a cherry Lyman lube sizer courtesy of member FredBuddy (an outstanding individual !) to replace my 30 year old one. New one must not be as smooth / level / ?. The heat plate doesn't seem to transfer heat as well to the new sizer.

I'm remembering there is such a thing as "heat transfer gel". Used it once when installing a heat sink on a CPU. Probably not cheap stuff.

Any ideas on a cheap substitute, something that won't get runny ?

No idea of a substitute but you can get a small tube from Radio Shack for a buck or two. It's a silicone base heat sink compound. I polished the base on my LAM2 and applied a thin coat of it and it made a definite difference.

Well the site was up earlier today anyhow though I thought the article in question was kind of a small stock they had.

Amazon, evilbay, and any local computer store or electronics place will carry it; Heat Transfer Compound works, Arctic Silver is the better stuff. You don't probably have to use Arctic Silver for a Lube Sizer; On the other hand it'll do the job well!

have you considered trying to smooth the bottom of the lube sizer?

progressively finer grits of sandpaper on a supported piece of glass (which is really flat) can do wonders for removing all other bumps and dings that keep you from getting uniform contact between the sizer and the heater.

You can do this along with the heat transfer compound to up heat transfer even more

There are polymer thermal transfer pads that are available in various thickness's 1mm to 5mm. I've seen them on e-bay they run about $10 depending on thickness, 4" x 4". They are a German product and delivery is 1 to 2 weeks. Never tried them but probably not anywhere as messy as a paste.

They don't seem to work quite as well as paste, tho this isn't a critical application (In a computer CPU if you lose bonding to the heat sink, some CPUs can be destroyed, more AMD ones than Intel) but you don't have to touch the paste - just put a blob of it in the middle of the contact area and let the clamping things together spread it out, then clean up any excess with a paper towel or whatever.
