Went out shooting yesterday with a new load for my factory 20" Rem700 .308 with a 1:10 twist barrel.
I shot these relatively fast and the barrel got pretty hot. I THINK that's where the two flyers came from.
Had a cold bore flyer as well. Pretty happy with the results other than the pesky flyers.
10 shots at 100 yards. Prone off a bipod and a rear sand bag out of the bed of my truck.
30 XCB bullet sized to .311" lubed with Lar's 2500+ with an overcoat of BLL.
40gr of RX15 for a MV of 2489fps

Nice Group. What was you lead Bh/mix. I have that same mold and am working up a load for my 308. Were they gas checked or plain base.

You were jamming these in the throat right? Your barrel has that super long throat.

Do you have any Federal brass? Or have you tried any yet?

Yes. These were jammed. I don’t have but a few pieces of Federal brass. I have 150 new pieces of Starline I’m going to try out.

Waco you're getting there, but a few things concern me. Was your target backer board plumed vertically? I ask because a good number of your bullet holes look like they hit at an angle. It's either that or your bullets were yawing/not stabilized. Being that only seven bullets cut the main group hole, and most of those are on the outer edge of the that hole, why is the center gone? Did the seven cut the around it and it fell off? With three fliers you have some issues you need to address. It's either bullet casting, lube, not starting straight (which the holes showing the bullets were tipped/unless your target wasn't vertical, possibly bullets over spun. Did you shoot these where you shot your 500 yard target before? Have you tried these the XCB bullet at further then 100 yards?

You're on the road so work out the fliers and put your target up straight!!!:target_smiley:

I would be happy with a 2MOA cast bullet group so maybe it shows how inept I am as a cast bullet maker. But it would bother me to have two shots that far out of the group. The cold barrel shot would be discounted if it was repeatable and/or the first shot out of a clean barrel.

It looks like 1MOA is possible with more tweaking and that is amazing!! I have accepted that if I want to shoot itty bitty groups at high velocity I use jacketed bullets. It makes me appreciate how much effort is required and the talent of those who can.

Vince. The targets were stapled onto cardboard that was hanging from a sawhorse.
We were shooting slightly downhill.
Maybe that’s why some of the holes look off??
Dunno.

Waco,

Nice shooting, especially at that speed.

Those flyers could be any number of things. I'll start by asking, what BHN, and what was the run-out on the ogive of that ammo?

Around 24bhn. Less than .002” runout.

Is the Starline a little thicker in the neck than the Yugo brass you were using? Just wondering. That was why I asked about the Federal. I always had my best accuracy with Federal brass because of this. And it was really consistent in weight also.

It’s around .013” if memory serves.
I’ll check tonight.

plumb bob wouldn't help at our range as it would be angling off to the side because of the winds!!!

Good shooting!!

Impressive shooting waco. That 30XCB mold has been on my " need to get" list for a while now. I see that you are using RX15, have you tested that boolit with IMR4064 or Varget?

Very nice Waco!

I bet the 2 high shots are from bbl. heat as you said.... The main group is very stable and the high shots are in line with that group.
My sporter weight 308 bbl. does the same if it gets too hot on a longer string like that.
When I slow the shot rate a bit, they go right back in the group on 10 shot stings @ 2450 fps. And the xcb boolit.
How much more speed do you think is left for the rl15 powder?

Huh, I was of the belief that the wind pushes the whole bullet to the direction it's blowing rather then turning the nose to that direction. If it turned the nose Wow could you imagine how far off target the bullet would be then? Think about it, when you're driving your truck or car and a very strong wind hits your vehicle from the side does it make it steer off the road? No.

Both Varget and 4064 are on my list as well as a few others...

Not sure. A little maybe. I might need to drop to a little slower powder to gain too much more. Trying to not over do the alloy. But I don't know where this alloy fails.....

I bought a pound of H414 to try out.

Okay, thanks Waco. Good luck with the h414 too. That was a great powder for the 7/08 with jacketed, but i haven't tried it with cast in the .308.

Me neither. It’s a new powder to me.

Windage is highly complex. See McCoy. Rinker's book formulas are useless. Forum discussions on windage tend to be at the latter level.
