I had never built a Poor Boy rifle, so figured I needed one.
So, once you have a new rifle, you need to make a new bag and horn, and a knife to skin beaver with. I also made a measure, ball bag, knapping tool, and turnscrew to service the rifle.
.53 Green River Rifle Works barrel, unknown original lock, and forged out the thimbles, sights, and trigger guard.

I do believe you must be one of those time travelers ,cause what you created looks as original as a original (out standing ) !

Looks mighty fine! Hard to tell from the pictures...did you put a butt plate on the rifle?

No, it's a typical Poor Boy.

No, it's a typical Poor Boy.

That's what I figured, but had to ask....

It looks anything but poor to me!
I love looking at your creations. Thanks for sharing.

Not too shabby for a rookie. How's it shoot?

After a fouling shot, at 50 yards the first load went into 1.5". I upped the charge 5 gr., and it was one hole, if I could hold it well enough. I'm going to have to try in at 100 yards when we get a nice day.

So I ended up with 70 gr. 3fff, pillow ticking patch with Moose Milk, and .520 RB.

Being a GRRW barrel, pretty much as I expected.

Very nice!
Rifle gun, bag, horn & knife. Either you work real fast or you had one looong winter. We're finally able to see dirt (mud) around here.

Totally awesome. Given the right set of clothes you could make people believe in time travel with that rig.

We are currently in winter month #7 here.

Fruit trees are budding in our area, yet we woke up to snowfall this morning. Winter is hanging around a little extra long this year, here in Illinois. Since your somewhat farther North, when do expect decent weather to hit in your area?

any minute now, but it probably won't last.
I think it will be two or three weeks before I will be able to work in the garden.

I've seen a lot of Memorial Day weekends with snow. Also mid-June, July 4, August 15, September 21. We always get three months of summer, we just never know which three.

Good morning
Fine winter project.... should make for a good companion tromping about the lonely areas.
Interesting that 3F works so well.

Actually, it turned out to be a pretty heavy rifle, so I will probably shoot it for a few months, then sell it to some young fellow. Too heavy for me to carry around long!
I'm already plotting on building another with a slim profile swamped Getz .50 barrel and a Cochran lock I have. It should be a pound or two lighter.

This is my chance to confess my ignorance- what is a swamped barrel?

Thick at the breech and muzzle, with a taper to around 2/3 length of the barrel. Think of it as a waist. Makes for a light, very nice handling rifle. Definitely my favorite to build with. Do a google, you should be able to find good images with dimensions.

My goodness....exquisite is the word that comes to mind. Stunning, absolutely stunning, all of the kit!!!! I've always had a very soft spot for Southern Mountain/Poor Boy's and haven't been without one since the earliest 80's. Living down here where squirrels are my main game they've always been 36's.

When we lived on the Wyoming/Idaho border we never worried about having a white Christmas....and usually had a white Thanksgiving. The question was always whether or not we'd have a white 4th of July. Fireworks are particularly lovely in a heavy snow storm. 9 months of winter and 3 months of bad skiing was the mantra.

Ric, nice work as usual. Here in Wis. we are having some "alert" days this weekend. 6-12" snow mid-State, not quite as much for us. Coldest-ever start of April!

Ok, fat fingered the 2 instead of the 3.

So what's your weight estimate with the 42?

This current gun is right on 8.5#. I would estimate the small profile barrel to make into a rifle of around 7 - 7.5#.

Another beauty! I was thinking of you recently and wondered what you might be building this winter? I don't know how you older fellas eyes work at small details as such. A real treat to see it!
