I’m sort of working on a couple of things at the same time here.
A little while ago I modified an old Lee mold that I had no use for and thought I’d give making sabot slugs a try. Then I shelved the project when my health deteriorated. So now I’ve picked it up again in conjunction with the foster slug project.
217672

It’s a .50 cal slug and I made some aluminum bushings to bring the size up enough to fit inside a regular shot cup.

217673

I split the bushing in half so it’ll depart the slug in flight.

217674

It pushes into the Hastings barrel with only light pressure. Consequently the Winchester Partition and the lightfield sabot both require more pressure than I can exert to get them to go in.

217675

These both weigh within 1 grain of each other at 499 and 500gr respectively
The finstr slug is sitting on a 1/8” 20g fibre card

217676

The partition slug is loaded to 1785fps with what looks like Alliant Steel powder. But I can’t be certain.

Hello Finstr, you can just paper patch them and test them.

till they too no longer go. Check the length of the paper for the right thickness.

Thanks fellas, I might try paper patching the foster slugs. I have had some success with the 450 marlin and using Teflon tape.

Superblazingsabots did modify the centrepin in your mold? The one slug looks like it has a protrusion thru the centre of the hollow base.

Hello Finstr, Please check the exact weight of the powder charge on The partition slug loaded to 1785 fps with what looks like Alliant Steel powder.
Can you please post a picture like this for all to see:

Thank you.

It’s exactly 43 grains of powder.
I was mistaken about the speed. These are 1725fps advertised on the box.
Also what I thought initially was that the powder looked like Alliant Steel but actually looks more like the CFE223 that I use in the .223
It's a very fine ball like powder.

Perhaps a proprietary blend even?

Finstr, Thanks for posting the pictures, very interesting setup.

How lucky are we that we get to cook our own and experiment with our creativity.

Very true SBS. I wish I had a test cannon to try all the loads I want to try without blowing myself up! Lol
