Just got a Traditions Trapper Percussion 50 cal single shot pistol. Anyone have any thoughts or comments. Also I plan to shoot patched balls and have a 495 dia RB mould. Anybody ever use these and how much 3G BP for the loads. I was planning on starting around 40 grs. since my ROA 44 uses 35 or 40 grs for a 45 cal ball

Wrong ball size for that pistol.

You want the .490" with a .015 patch otherwise you better get a heavy hammer to start a .495 ball.

I'd start with 20-30gr 2fg or 3fg.

How about a 50 cal Lee R.E.A.L. bullet have that also. I use them in my 50 cal. T/C New Englander. Have used up to 90 grs BP with them. Very powerful load. Will go clear thru a 5" pine tree

Both your ideas will work but like stated you are going to need considerable force to get either in and with a pistol, that could be a little awkward.

Been shooting a Traditions Kentucky caplock pistol in .50 caliber and have found 25 grains of 3F with a .490 RB and pillow ticking works fine out to 50 yds where it has about a 4 inch drop. A .495 RB will need a thinner patch or more work starting the ball. 40 grs of 3F is a little stout but give it a try if you don't mind a bit of recoil.
