Has anyone tried Trail Boss in the 7mm. I have a 7mm model 5 rolling block I would like to try it in.

I have played with it in my 7x57 and had fun.

It shot good, killed a bunny with the first shot with a 139-140 grain cast at about 80 yards.
At the 100 yard range the cast shot to the same point of aim as my jacketed ammo.

Can you tell me how many grains. Looks like 14 to 15 would be about right.

I had a # 5 Rem. rolling block and did not try TB powder in it. Trail Boss is a fast burning powder and in large capacity cartridges it can produce hi pressures. In the 7 X 57 I would start at about 10 grs. with any bullet and work up from there.
I have used TB in many others and usually find the best accuracy at about a 75 % case capacity loading.

15 grains of Trail Boss sounds like a lot, even for a bolt rifle. 17 grains is probably a compressed load for that cartridge, and those more knowledgeable than myself tell me that's forbidden. Jedman's advice is good.

Edit: Mr. Lee's book gives some trail bos loads for jacketed, though none for 7X57. Apples and oranges sure, but his max load (compressed) for 7mm-08 shows a pressure over 50,000 psi. I'm concerned about the safety of a load in the mid-teens in a rolling block.

Thank you are correct. Had been using 10.5 Unique with the Lyman 287308. 10.gr of trail boss would probably be about right.

Funny about that..ADI,who make the stuff give many loads, and some of their loads have a (C )after them....So they say no compressed loads, then specify several compressed loads in their tables. Not trying to make any particular point here.

Yeah, I know. Lee's book, Modern Reloading 2nd edition, gives compressed Trail Boss loads for at least a few rifle calibers including 25-06, 270, 7mm-08, and 7mm Remington Magnum. Most of them show fairly low pressure on the upper end except for the 7mm-08. Just one of those things that make you wonder, although it doesn't really matter to me since I'm not the adventurous type.

How did the 10.5 grains of Unique shoot?

I recently came into possession of a decently sporterized '93 Mauser that I really like and with the cast loads I've tried in it, it shoots pretty well. Gonna deer hunt with it when I get around to it using a hollow point Lyman 287308, but have a couple of lighter weight molds I'd like to come up with a cheap target load for.

Had to size them to .290 for my Rolling Block. That is the same bullet I am using.
The 10.5 gr with Unique is giving me 1 1/2 to 2 inch at 100 yards. Not sure what fps it is giving. I would not be afraid to use it on deer out to 100 yards or a few yards past.
I do cheat a little and have to use a scope, eyes are getting old.

I have a plain based RN mold about 145 grains I have some cast up. Now that I have a good quantity of uniform brass, I plan to start loading this in earnest and have a lot of practice ammo on hand. I was thinking 8-9 grains of Red Dot for starters.

When I tried that hollow pointed 287308 with the starting load of 5744 it showed good promise. I think it'll be a good hunting bullet for the ranges I normally hunt.
