Well I picked up a box of Barnes XPB 460 S&W 451 dia. 200gr cannelured bullets.Trouble is I don't have a 460 S&W,so I loaded 6 up to use in my Ruger Blackhawk 7.25in barrel. With 10grs Unique, starline brass and a OAL 1.700". I was ready. Shot this 1 1/2 in thick lead disk, bullet made a hole 5/8 wide and 3/8 inch exit hole on the way out. Don't have any plans yet for deer hunting with this load, but more work with phone books and slab of clay, who knows.

You are supposed to shoot metal plates with lead boolits, not shoot lead plates with metal bullets. ;)

I know ktw,Just had to do it. Just looked at loading data for the 460S&W with this 200 gr Barnes and looks like this bullet needs lots more speed to mushroom than a 45 colt can put out.

Jim, I think you're right on that last bit. They do require a lot more speed. Maybe in a 454 Casull, but I don't think the 45 Colt could do it, unless it's a rifle.

I don't know if they still make them, but Barnes used to make .451 HP bullets that had a large open hollow point, not a spitzer shape at all. Those had very reliable expansion, I messed around with them in my 454 Casull and got good expansion in wet newsprint from 600 fps all the way up to max (2000+). They also made them in .458, advertised as a FN HP for the 45/70.
