My next project is to develop a 200 yard deer/hog load for cast in a 30-06. To me, that means I would like to drive the 198 grain Noe version of the RCBS 180 grain flat nosed, gas checked 30 caliber bullet at about 2000 FPS. I have on hand 4198, 4895 and Varget in rifle powders and if there were a compelling case for doing so I would be willing to buy a pound of something else (if I can find it local). I was thinking of starting with Varget simply because I actually have two pounds of it and Lyman gives data for 195 and 200 grain boolits with this powder. Which of the 3 powders I have on hand would you pick? If none of them are suitable, which powder would you go out and buy?

Varget, 4895, 4064, RL15 will all do what you want in the .30-'06. I shoot a similar load in my M1 Garand. Start at about 36 grains with a weighed 1 grain tuft of Dacron tucked loosely into the neck to take up some of tbe excess free airspace. Do not poke the Dacron down against the powder. Adjust tbe charge as needed for best grouping, but somewhere from 36-40 grains is the sweet spot.

Fantastic. What is the twist on your rifle? My Tikka is 1 in 11.

4895 works well
