I know it sounds bizarre, but has anyone ever tried shooting a 45 maxiball in a 50 cal using a sabot? I have various 50 cal molds, but just got a 45 maxiball mold and was thinking of trying it out in my 50's using a sabot for a mild target/plinking load... 45 maxiball only weighs 230 gr so recoil should be a lot less that the 460 gr chunks I now shoot...I know that I can shoot 187 roundballs, but was thinking the maxiball might offer more accuracy and perhaps be a candidate for whitetails out to 150 yards or so.

Thanks for taking time to read... if you have tried it, I would welcome your comments.

Kindest regards,

TheMoose

I haven't done that exactly, but I have shot 50 cal RB in a 28ga shotgun wad from my 54 cal rifle. It works very well with about 1" groups at 50yds which is about as well as I can shoot iron sights and my old eyes.

As long as they fit tight in the sabot and it fits tight in the bore no reason it shouldn't work. I'd suggest 3f BP or 3f triple 7.

The Maxie isn't the most aerodynamic round especially out past 100y but it certainly is worth a try. Let us know how it does.

Sounds interesting but never tried that. Would be interested in hearing the results.
