My buddy has what appears to be a M1 Carbine reciever; he found in an old house.

It is stamped "Universal" and made in Florida. It has a manufacture # at rear top. It is one piece setup: barrel, reciever, trigger mechanism, and double springed. The bolt is operational. The stock is missing, which makes sense around here. The bluing 100%.

Is this really a M1 Carbine? What is it worth?

...........Universal was a civvie outfit that made copies of the GI unit. The only Universal clones I'm aware of weren't real faithfull copies. Many G1 components do not fit. Iver Johnson also produced copies but they were a MUCH better copy.

The Universals will shoot however, as well as any other M1 Carbine.

They shoot pretty good. I have a universal. Where you will have problems is getting parts. Mainly stock. I would like to get a folding stock for mine but all of them say (Will Not Fit Universal Carbins) or (For Military Issue Only)
I have heard of people making the stocks fit but if I am going to spend $179 I would like for it to fit.
If you need metal parts (or wood) Numrich Gun Parts is the best place I have found
