I've dabbled in some round ball loads in 20 and 12, about to get more serious about loading slugs in a rifles H&R. It is chambered for 3" shells. So the question is; besuides the obvious power advantage it would give, which really doesn't matter, would there be an accuracy advantage to using 3" hulls so as to avoid the slug of ball have to jump a"free bore" before engaging the rifling?

Many of us have thought so from time to time but doesn't prove out most times on paper. Lots of bulky powder like Steel to reach higher velocities often make it mandatory to good crimp height.

I plan on trying the Lee target minie that looks like a huge HBWC, inside a shotcup wad. I don't recall exactly what it weighed but I have good data for Blue Dot and 1 1/8 ounce of lead shot. I'll remember to weigh them before I go ahead, but it seems I remember they are close to 500 grains.

Have shot the Lee slug out of a rifled H&R Handi rifle a lot. Shoots well up to 75 yards. The slug drops a lot after 50 yards. I load down some so not to be punished by the gun while shooting. Fun to shoot, have shot at hogs but always shot under due to being out to far for a slug gun. The gun only has iron sights but with some practice the group is not bad out to 50 yards.

Most slug guns have a long throat so you are likely to have "jump" with either a 2 3/4" or 3" hull. FWIW, I had a 3" chambered h&r USH lite and it was very accurate with turbo's hb slugs in old style win 2 3/4" hulls.
