Need info on new to me rolling block

Hi, i’m a new member here. I was searching through my local armslist ads and came across a Remington Rolling block 1. The guy knew very little about the gun as I knew very little about it too. But, the price was very low I thought so I did a little research and just bought on a whim. So, now im tring to find out more on the gun. The guy said it was a 50-70, but After I got it home the bore measures .446 and a 45-70 fits nicely in it. So, im going to do a chamber casting on it to know for sure. The gun is in overall great condition. Bore is shiny, action nice and smooth, wood is great, trigger is nice and smooth with about 5lb pull. The stamping on the receiver tang is as follows. Remington ilion, NY USA pat may 3, nov 15 1864, april 17th, aug 27 th 1867, nov 7 1867, nov 7 1871. These are the only markings on rifle. The action has a half cock safety too. Any info would be appreciated.

sounds like a 43 Spanish, it;s dead on for 44-77 Sharps Rem., but in the range for 43 Spanish. I would guess real top dollar collector value is GONE as it's been tapped and drilled for a modern Lyman rear sight.
Look under the front wood for caliber stamping. That's a nice shooter. I am jealous.

I don't know what you paid for it but, "not much" or "very low" and the condition you described sounds like you will be a happy shooter. I am interested in what the chambering will turn out to be. Like ascast said, you can look for this on the underside of the barrel. Sometimes it is a little cryptic. I hope it is the start of a love affair with BPCR's. Enjoy!

Well I can’t get the photo to load. But results of chamber casting are. Chamber length 2.6” chamber diameter .490”, freebore .060”. I’m thinking it’s a 45-100.

You should check the underside of the barrel, right in front of the forearm. If that's a factory barrel (which I doubt) it would have a caliber marking on the bottom flat. It would also have the "E. Remington and Sons" marking on the top barrel flat if factory.
Check the lower tang on the receiver also, and see if it's the same length as the top tang. If it's the same length top and bottom, it's a military receiver with a new barrel. If the bottom tang is longer and there's a screw with slotted head in the end of the lower tang, it's an early sporter receiver.
The .446" caliber is not correct for any of the .45 caliber cartridges Rem. used, nor is it correct for the .44-77 Rem-Sharps bottleneck. The .44-77R-SBN uses a .452" barrel, and not .446". You didn't list rim diameter, but it could be a .44-100 Ballard, or .44-90 Sharps. My guess is the Sharps caliber.

I should of corrected myself on the .446 bore. It is actually.455” Thait is off of the casting. The .446 was trying to do it from the muzzle with calipers. The rim diameter is .620”. The lower tang is same length with no screw or slot, just the bottom end of the upper screw comes through the bottom tang. I have looked all over the barrel and can not find any markings. Im pretty positive it is not original

The equal length tangs and round top receiver tell me it's a military action that someone installed an octagon barrel on. The case length and rim diameter would fall in line with the .44-90 or .44-100 Sharps. Both being the same case, with just a lighter bullet to allow the .44-100 more powder. The .455" is a bit larger bore, but since it's a custom barrel the owner may have wanted the larger .455" vs. the usual .452" groove for whatever bullets he planned to shoot.
Did your cast show a straight taper chamber, or bottleneck?
Sounds like one heck of a great buy to me at $280! I've paid more than that just to get a solid complete action to build on!
