My Son and I drilled and tapped 2 94 Winchesters today for Williams receiver sights. We were supposed to be Elk hunting, but he was worn out from the last 3 days, and to tell the truth, I wasn't really looking foreward to slogging thru 12-16" of crusty snow either.

Tho I have owned several 94's this was the first time I stripped one down enough to get the bolt out. I "Googled" "dissassembly + 94 + Winchester" and got Junior's site. Great discription and photo's.

One was my 444 Marlin, and it was a bear to tap. The second was an older 30-30 I got from my wife's brother in law, Her Sister's Husband (I call him that so I don't have to claim him :-) ) The 30-30 has a serial number in the 1,600,000 range, how old is that? I was told it was from the 30's. It tapped alot easier. Alot of internal differences as well. I think I will start shooting and hunting with these rifles more, they just pack better than my '06 bolt gun.

Amen to that! Seems to me these receiver sighted Leverguns put a lot of fun back into hunting; instead of being overburdened by the equipment.

1949 or 1950 would be production date. 1950 began with number 1626101 so now you know. If only they were as simple to work on as the Marlins. They do pack nice though. I shot my first deer with a 94 that was made in 1930. Has a receiver sight too. Still have it. Regards, Woody

Another firm believer in receiver sights. All of my hunting rifles wear them except two. Same sight picture on every rifle, fast & easy to get onto. The model 94 is naked without one IMHO. The only problem is that now that I've got them all on, I can't see much beyond 100 yards. :holysheep I tell myself that there are no long shots in New England, and the varmint rifle wears a 6-20X50. They make 2" orange dots for target work anyway - those I can see.

Very nice and the steel looks the part. My 1895 Marlin 45/70 wears a Williams Foolproof with the centre removed. Doesn't look as sharp as the Lyman, but works just as good. I have a Redfield receiver sight for a Model 70 and I will get around to fitting it to my pre 64 one day. Most of my bolt rifles wear 2-7 or 3-9 Leupolds. The lever rifles pack better though. I'm cashed up at the moment and am considering breaking from the fold for awhile and picking up a 338 Win Mag M77 Mk2. They are only $625AUD at the moment.
