this weekends haul

Dug this pile out of the berms at the local range this weekend. For those familiar with MN. I'm sure you can appreciate busting up sand piles and sifting dirt at our wonderful balmy noontime temperature at 1 degree. Couple hours of back breaking work. but I think I pulled a respectable load from them.

Figured it's worth it since if someone doesn't pull them out. the club has to pay for it's removal.

it took 2 of us to lift each of the metal containers.

based on how far my truck squatted, it's more than 800#. it's sitting lower than when the trailer is loaded and that puts 700# on the hitch, and this is loaded at the front of the box!

I'm think'n about do'n some that ,,what type of sifter or shaker do( did you make ) you have to separate the dirt??

shaker couldn't be simpler. couple 2x6's cut to make a simple box with long handles on each end, and some heavy screen attached to the bottom. ended up being 2 layers, a finer hardware cloth over the top of a really heavy coarse steel mesh. worked really well. Although I will say fragments .22 size and under went right through. too much coarse gravel to make it any finer. I bet fully half of the lead is still out there. We debated making a finer screen but figured the time vs returns just wasn't worth it. You'd need a gold dredge or sluice, or spend a lot of time heating up a whole lot of gravel to get the rest back.

although the idea of taking a munch of 55 gallon steel drums and making a freaking huge bonfire did get entertained.

Sometimes there is a point of diminishing returns. It sounds like you are at a good compromise. Thats a lot of work but a really nice haul!
