I recently acquired 3 lbs. of H205 from an estate sale. I have no data for it. Is there a current equivalent? Thanks in advance.

308; haven't seen this number for a couple decades, I would make sure it hasn't deteriated. On one burn rate chart I show the following order
W760 fastest
H414
H205
N160
AA4350
IMR4350
H4350 slowest
There is published data in Speer#8,#9,#10, Hornady 3rd edition, Sierra 1st and second editions. If you have a specific cartridge, bullet combo in mind I can give you what published data I can find. Hope this helps.

Lucky rascal you!!!
H-205 made my 22-250 sing sweet music. When they dropped it I found H 414 and it does well but my old Savage 112V would shoot in the .3's with the Speer 52gn hp and Siera 52gn match hp.

Hope this helps.Scooter I had those manuals and more, got lost in the divorce approx. 20 years ago, doggoneit. I used Hodgdon's methods for checking for deterioration, it smelled fine.

I'd like to have data for the .22-250 like Bullshop mentioned only with the Hornady 50 gr. SX. And if it's not too much trouble and if you have data available using it in .308 Win. and a Hornady 150 SP/RN.

If it would be easier and you don't mind doing it you can send it to my email address: llathem@alltel.net rather than take up space here. Either way I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again, Lamar...

308; not much data in those calibers, probably a little slow in the 308 with the 150 bullet. I did find some in Speer and Sierra with their bullets.
Speer#10
50grsp- 38.0-42.0(3741fps for 42.0 out 24" bbl)
in the 308 looks like the data starts at 165 grainers and gave top velocities with 200 gr bullets
Sierra 2nd-200 gr sp-48.5 grs=2450 fps
Speer#10-200 gr sp-49.0 grs=2441 fps
Seems like it used to be tooted as "the 30/06 powder" by some gunrag authorities.

Sorry friend like Sweeler all I could find is the Speer #10. There should have been something in the black box, the file card box that was commendered from BSM for the greater good but no joy. I do not remember doing it but must have tossed it when I ran out of H-205 15 years or so ago. I must have used the Speer #10 as a guide so its in there somewhere.
As I recall there was a quirk with 205 and was the reason they dropped it. Cant remember the quirk for shure but be cautious of pressure spikes near top end pressure, and pressure increase with temp increase. Enjoy!

I have the Speer #9 and it doesn't have any loads of 205 powder for the 22-250. I also have the old Hornadys too, they don't either but do have a load for 203 not 205 powder.

Joe;NORMA-N203 is a lot faster than HODGDON-H205, about 20 places on burn rate chart, not what he is looking for!

swheeler,

I know he's not looking for 203, I was just stating that was the only powder those two old manuals I have listed for that company.

Sent scans from Hodgdon's Data Manual No. 22 to your email. Hope you can read 'em and they don't blow out your inbox. Regards, Woody

I use H205 for my Ruger 77 in .284 Winchester and really like it; bought an 8 lb keg about 25 years ago and still have a fair supply. I think there was a "Propellant Profile" published in Handloader Magazine about then, if I can find it I'll see what it says for .308 Winchester. Should have a copy of it in my Pet Loads book, but will have to locate it.

Found the "Propellent Profile" for H205, which listed loads for 12 different cartridges ranging from 22-250 to .338 Mag, and includes the .308. It says basically that it's too slow burning for anything but heavy bullets in the .308, which doesn't have enough capacity. They show 2 loads, 49.0 gr w/ 200 gr bullet for 2,464 fps and 48.0 grs w/ 220 gr bullet for 2,369 fps. But, they're only making about 42-44,000 cpu pressure with these loads, so they aren't all that hot. The article does say that H205's most notable attribute is accuracy and the ability to maintain top accuracy with maximum loads. I use 55.0 gr w/ 140 Nosler partition for my .284 Winchester and it's very accurate. With a 120 gr bullet the article shows 58.0 grs for 3,057 fps; these loads ought to be useful in the .280 Remington as well.

McLintockMcLintock, I appreciate it the .308 loads, and I hate to trouble you further, but do you have any data for the .280 Rem. I lucked up and got some data from Hodgdon's for the .270 but none for the .280. They sent me data for the .243 but none for the 7/08 or .308. Likewise, they sent data for the .25-06, .270 and .30-06 but none for the .280 Rem.

I almost forgot to mention, woody1 sent an email with some .308 data. The data using the 150 gr. bullet maxes out with 51.0 gr. at 2582 fps and 39,200 cup.

BTW I would suspect this powder is at least 20 years old by the price on the cans, off the top of my head between 4 and 5 bucks a lb. No worries about the age, I have some H335 and that's older, got it when it was less than 2 bucks a lb. Thanks again, Lamar...

For the .280 Remington/7mm Express Remington I have a Pet Loads article dating from November-December 1979 that lists all sorts of loads, from 115 gr to 175 gr bullets of all makes and several suitable powders. I think I got my load for the .284 from this article as case capacities are very similar for the two rounds. For H205, it lists:
115 gr Speer H.P. 58.5 gr for 3,159 fps; 2nd most accurate and 2nd highest velocity
120 Hornday H.P. 57.0 gr for 3,047 fps; extremely accurate, good varmint load
140 gr Sierra Spitzer 55.0 gr for 2,861 fps; very accurate load
140 gr Nosler Partition 54.0 gr for 2,860 fps; no remarks
145 Speer Spitzer B.T. 54.0 gr for 2865 fps; near max, 44 fps less in Norma Cases
154 Hornady Soft Point 53.0 gr for 2,773 fps; no remarks
160 gr Nosler Partition 54.0 gr for 2,878 fps; maximum, very accurate, but do not exceed, one of two best all around loads; I tried this load in my .284 and it shot so completely through elk with the close in shots I normally get (not my hunting ability, just the thick vegetation), I went to the 140 gr to keep the bullet inside the animals.
A Remington 700 ADL was used for the testing.
