Sort of hard to get the whole process into one picture, but I'll go ahead and post a picture of the finished 45-70s.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180208/d2bd42d682a46c60e114b1291d621498.jpg

Nice patching. Nice set of calipers too. My family going back to my grandparents are from Athol, and all have worked at Starrett's beginning in 1939. They make great stuff.

They do make nice tools. My one gripe with those calipers is that the rack is not covered and you can gum up the works with some errant chips or debris. Better used for inspection after the cutting's done. I especially like that they don't require batteries. :)

Yes, there is something to be said about operating without batteries.

Newb question.
I have seen paper patch bullets and I have heard of them in the past, I actually think the first time was watching Quigley Down Under LOL. If I understand properly you get a bullet mold without any grooves and then you put a type of paper around it, does that paper remove the need for using a lubricant? I'm going to have to dig into this a little bit, it sounds interesting.

MOA, your fired primers are showing a mite of overpressure.

I think those are McFred's primers HABCAN. I don't have any images in this topic this month. But, thanks for the heads up.

If you meant my primers, they're fine. The brass is rated for 65ksi, the action is stout enough for 'modern' magnum loads. The firing pin hole is oversized and no matter what pressure the primers pucker some; the edges/corner of the primers are still rounded and there's no hard bolt lift or sticky extraction despite the very slight case-taper. Never have blanked a primer despite thousands of full-pressure jacketed rounds on that receiver.

Wow, old thread. Mr. Bullbarrel, it's a .510" Winchester Short Magnum wildcat, not a 50-70. 505gr pure lead .500" diameter patched up to .512". Here's the same case with a 700gr tumble-lubed projectile: https://s32.postimg.cc/bmchix1vp/700gr_WSM.jpg

It'd be similar to a shortened .50 Razorback wildcat based of the Remington Ultramag case intended for a long action.
