Maybe I should ask this a little different. What do you guys think of having a 14" 30-30 Contender rebored to 35-30, I know it's not as cool as a 94 Win would be but I only have one 94 Win and it was made in 1925. It would not be cool to do that to it.

It would be a wonderful idea.
Years ago I ended up with a 15", 357 maximum Contender barrel. I was going to sell it, but months went by until I read an article where Mike Bellm would rechamber such to a 358 Bellm. Which is no more than a 444 Marlin case run through a 358 Winchester sizing die.
So, remembering that barrel I packed it off for a little custom work.
A 35-30 would have less case capacity, but would be a great step up from a 30-30 Winchester.

I have an Encore and love the idea. The only reason i haven't done it is i originally bought mine with a 35 whelen bbl. and can load that one up and down from mild to wild. If i didn't already have the whelen, i would have had a bbl. re-bored for it in 35/30.
Lol, i need to pick up a good used lever to have an excuse for it i guess.

I really like the idea of one in a contender.

Awesome idea in my opinion. .30-30 brass is cheap, easy to find, has a nice long neck for holding cast, even fairly long and large cast.

As a .35 it is all of that and then some.

I have a WWII era Win 94 with a bad bore, leaning more and more to calling JES one of these days and getting it sent out there. I'd rather invest a bit more in it and get a rifle that will really shoot than inflict it onto someone else. Gun stores and pawn shops only offer roughly 1/4 of the guns value. So that is not a good option IMO. Unless you have something pretty rare.

Have the money, just have not gotten around to making the call and committing to it yet.

A good Win 94 is a terrible thing to waste.
GhostHawk- get that thing in the mail to JES!

I an still peeved about spoiling the chamber in a flatband Win 94 in 25/35 WCF a few years back. No more dacron fillers for me.

Ahem. I wanted to do SOMETHING with that Win 94, though--and the 35/30 got a lot of consideration. In the end, I opted to have JES in Oregon rebore the barrel & chamber to 38/55 M&B, and I have been very happy with the outcome from that conversion. In fact, I am in the middle of loading a small lot of fired brass in that caliber at this time. Lyman #375248 will get the call.

Well its not wasted, it sits in the corner (yeah the gun time out corner) Just above it is the spot I hang my good targets. Current one is the Ruger Mk III 22/45. 10 quick shots in a circular group just about 1.5 inches from side to side in the biggest dimension. Not my best effort, but not bad.

It knows it was bad. It is just being reminded. And shown what is acceptable.

Eventually it will get its chance at redemption.

Kinda shot my wad this month with that #4 Rem Rolling Block.
Was not expecting that one. Not every day you get to make dreams come true.

The .35/30 is a sleeper. For most uses, at least here in MI, it will get the job done without a lot of hoopla. If I ever decide to hunt with cast bullets, it will be my choice if I cannot find a .358 Win. I have a M94 Winchester that I got in an estate sale for the platform. It is not a pretty gun and has some rust on it, but it would be a good hunting/truck gun in the woods and in .35/30 will hit hard even at lower velocities. But frankly, it is difficult for me to make the investment. I think it is just north of $300 for the rebore/rechamber. Is it really that much better than a .30/30?

If I had a gun with a poor bore or that did not shoot, spending $300 would be worth it. Doing it for ****s and giggles....not so much.

I have always thought the 35/30-30 would be "the perfect" cast boolit rifle.
I first saw that round on the cover of a 1979 NRA publication , CAST BULLETS , by Col. E. H. Harrison USA (ret.). Targets showed two 5 shot groups of .77 inch and .88 inch both at 100 yards , the load data was on the target. I've looked for a rifle so chambered ever since. I'm going to look for a used break action single shot in 30-30 with a bad bore and see if I can afford the reboring to 35 cal.
My vote...DO IT !
The load on those targets: 35/30-30 Win. , Rem. 788 , 290 grain Hoch FP, 32.9 grains WW748.
Note: I haven't verified this load with any published data, do so before trying it.
