You had me worried there for a second until I read post #3.

The Ruger DA Six series revolvers were some of the best DA revolvers ever made , IMO.

Looking for a Speed Six next!

Ah, they were made of cast steel and are very strong.

Until polymer came into vogue, all Ruger frames except the Mark 1 were cast steel.
The words weak and Ruger do not belong in the same sentence.

Are those Ruger grips? They look a little different than the security six grips I grew up with.

No kidding they are strong. We had one, a blue 4" barrel version, come to the shop last week. The cylinder carried 3 live rounds and 3 empty cases. The owner advised he was firing the ammo that came with the Ruger when he bought it 10 years ago. He had fired 3 rounds, but then the trigger would not pull, the hammer could not be cocked and the cylinder could not be made to move or open from the frame. The pistol was clean, no signs of abuse. The ammo was the cause of the tie-up. That ammo (.38 Special cases, mixed manufacture) was handloaded and the last round to fire flattened the primer, which then partially dislodged from the case and froze the cylinder in place. That primer locked the cylinder in place. We got the cylinder open and found the primer on the work bench. The primers in the 2 rounds that did fire were flat and flowing toward the edges of the primer pocket. After a close, detailed inspection we found no damage to the cylinder, chambers, frame or barrel. A strong revolver? You betcha. We also suggested that the owner dispose of any remaining ammo that came with the revolver. He sounded enthusiastic to do just that.

GOOD! Because otherwise, that would have been a REALLY STUPID question! If you gave Archimedes a longer lever and a place to stand, he might have been able to move the earth, but it would take more than that to pry my GP-100 from my cold, dead hands.

Well done Sir!

Well done Sir!Thanks you, I believe it's a good thing.

I really like the GP100s, especially the 3" and Match. But, growing up I was introduced to pistols shooting my uncle's Security Six and I was smitten from there on.

If only I can find a Speed Six, in 9mm Rimmed even, Life would be comfortable.

The hardest thing about the decision to get the Six was the fact the same store had a VERY NICE Mark 1, made in 1952, for sale as well. It could have been a shooter, but it was nice enough to put up as well. I went with the Six because I really don't "collect" much anymore, and I want a Mark 2 Standard instead.

Several years ago my nephew asked me to take him to a gun show and advise him as to what handgun to buy for his only handgun.
Yes, he left with a 4" blued Security Six for $275. I told him hurry up and buy it before I did.
I share your desire for a Speed Six!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using TapatalkMy uncle's had the Security and Police Sixes as Troopers. In fact everyone I knew them. Back then, Smith's were still too high and owners were griping about having to figure out which "frame size" to get. LOL Everyone that was having to furnish their own weapon got a Ruger.

In high school, wondernines were making a big splash, Glocks were still hanging around, and the winds had changed in the LEO market. Revolvers were old school and dated. Sixes could be had for $200-$175, depending on the condition. You couldn't touch a Smith for under $350-$400. So it was on the of first handguns I got for plinking and shooting.

So it's a little bit of my past. Glad I was able to get it.

BTW, I tried some Hogue grips on it and didn't like them. Have some Uncle Mike's coming. I love the stock ones, but do not want to miss them up. So might just find a set of older ones and use them.

It shoots great! And yeah, it's strong! I shot up the rest of my reloads I had for my Big Boy and some 38 +p+ "Treasurer Loads" I had made up for my 38 SP101. Wow! What some flame balls! Only sight adjustment needed was elevation. :)

Well it was a pretty good evening at the range.
Security Six and LCRx did well.

How's the LCRX working out for you? I think I'm gonna get one this year. Does it prefer a certain boolit weight?

How's the LCRX working out for you? I think I'm gonna get one this year. Does it prefer a certain boolit weight? It's weird. I couldn't shot it for nothing single action when I first got it. After couple hundred rounds and it's giving me nice tight doubles at 7 yards, but low. think it's the white stripe on the front sight that is giving me fits. Ordered a Hi Viz FO front sight. Hope it helps.

Mine likes lighter bullets, 110/125 if pushed fast. Seems like mine hits low unless it's +p. I noticed my 148 WCs were hitting dead on, but they were full charged and moving.

All in all, I like the LCRX over the LCR I had and it's edging out my 637. Going to see if the Hogue Boot Grip works on the LCRX. Would make for better pocket carry.

Asking was a bit more than mine and not as good of shape. Was still a nice looking shooter.

LGS has a Stainless 3" Six, but it's prices high and has had a lot of trigger work done to it. It's scary light SA trigger turned me off.

And am I wrong in saying 3"? We're they 2.5"? Didn't know what length they made them in.

My understanding is that 2-3/4", 4", and 6" were the most common barrel lengths on the Sixes. 2-1/2" and 3" were not catalogued but runs of them were made for agencies and distributors that requested them, and bring a premium with collectors. Also included are oddities such as 6" barrel Security Sixes with fixed sights and round butt Service Sixes.

I would guess your LCRX would be dead on with a heavier slug. Ruger probably figures that the traditional 158 grain load is still going to be fired the most, and so designed the sights accordingly. The original LCR grip isn't ideal, but can easily be shaped with coarse sandpaper and the aftermarket is slowly coming out with more options.

Here is a photo of a 2 3/4" Speed-Six with a Tyler "T"-grip adaptor on the left and a S&W Model 65 with a 3" barrel on the right.

213586

The DA "Six" Series Rugers with the short barrels had 2.75" barrels. (2 3/4")

There were special models, such as Postal Inspectors 3" Speed-Six but they are rare.
