Am I the only one that finds using Lyman 457193 and 457135 I cannot go over 2.535 for C.O,L. in the Ruger Number 1 45/70 ?

Set it up so that closing the lever gives the slightest push into the lands, it will shoot fine.

Plenty of room for enough powder to pop primers.

Was worried about rising pressures, a lot of listed loads give a much longer C.O.L.

The newer Ruger #1's in .45-70 have a much shorter throat than the earlier ones. All of my manuals show lengths that would not work in mine for a number of common bullets. Interestingly the Speer 400gr jacketed bullet, which has got to be one of the more common bullets was one that would not fit at 2.55".

I ended up having the chamber throated just enough to seat the bullets I used. I no longer have that rifle, but it shot quite well.

My #1 in 45/70 has no throat as commonly seen on other rifles. Basically where the chamber ends the rifling starts. Even loading the bulk Remington 300 grain JHP's I have to watch the seating depth. Can seat the 300 grain JHP out to where the bottom of the cannelure is exposed but not any longer. The Lyman 486 grain gas checked bullet will work with the top driving band set at the case mouth. The standard SAAMI 45-70 chamber really has no throat. You can look up the chamber drawing online. The chamber just has a short chamfer angle on the start of the rifling.
I have multiple 45-70 single shots made by multiple companies and they all have the same chamber configuration.

I like to use an expander the same size as the bullet in single shots.
The only grip on the bullet is provided by the spring back of the case after the expander is withdrawn.
My OAL is determined by the bullet engraving the rifling. This permits me to use the same ammo in all my rifles.
I can usually seat the bullets as I shove the case in the chamber with my thumb. If they stop too long I close the breech block to finish seating. I don't know or care what the OAL is. I never shoot cast bullets at high pressures so there is no concern about the pressure variations in a strong single shot.

Them everyone seems to agree a 10 gr load of Unique would be safe even with a deep seated 500+gr bullet as well as Trailboss load so loaded ?

I have never loaded Trail Boss.
Lyman lists loads with more Unique than you mentioned.
I have used 13 grains of Unique with bullets of 300 grains up to 500 grains - at least 2 lbs of it.
My 500 grn bullet was a 457125 Govt bullet so the nose extended into the rifling as a bore rider.

All bets are off if you double charge a case.
