I just got back from our local salvage store. They have lead free solder, it is tin, copper & selinium, 1 pound rolls for a dime, 10 cents! It looks like they have 2-300 rolls of the stuff! Would it work for a tin source or would the other 2 componets rule it out. Somebody help, I need to get back over there if this stuff will work.
Thanks, Malcolm

Malcolm,

It should work just fine! It is probably 98%+ tin. I'd like a couple flat rate boxes full if you want to sell some surplus :)

Malcolm,

Buy every bit of it, even if you have to beg, barrow or steal the money. I can almost assure you that every one here would be more than happy to pay you back with a bit extra for your time and trouble. I know I would. Also, John is probably correct in his estimation of the percentage. All the lead free solder I have seen ran from 96 to 98% tin. I am positive it will work fine.

Best Wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

I would appreciate having 10-15 rolls, if you decide to take a large quanity or to take it all. I will pay you for your trouble, Just say what it is worth to you.

Thanks,

Geez, I've been ripped off!!!

I went to the local scrap yard yesterday and found 42 rolls of 50/50 lead/tin solder in a bucket. Never seen it in the scrap yard, so I went & asked first what they'd sell it for. They said 30 cents a pound. I went and got the bucket. They said they didn't think their buyers wanted to mess with it. I was a dollar short & pulled out my debt card, the said, "that's alright, $11 is fine".

I thought I got a fantastic deal...until now.

You better go back & buy all that up.

You got a great deal ! :)

Remember, you actually have yours home already @ .60/pound for tin! ;)

I would be VERY happy !

I just spent $1.00/pound for tin and felt pretty good, but I had to process 50 pounds of radiator shop debris to get it ! Stinky, messy job !

A few years back, when I was still fittin' and weldin' pipe, I repaired a boat trailer for a salesman at a local plumbing supply house. He hooked me up with a 50 roll case of Sterling Taramet solder. At the rate of 1/20, I'm STILL usin' that stuff !

And I will take a flat rate box full, too. When you go back, you might think you need a mask & gun, just don't take them...

10 cent a pound is ridiculously low. Hard to believe a scrap metals dealer is that far off on his value. You simply have to buy every roll. You could make 30 times your investment inside a week. Probably way more than 30 times your investment on eBay.

Jimlakeside, yes, I am! I made it back to the salvage store today and I have bad news, good news and more good news. The bad news, there was only 27 rolls of the solder left, it was in a box on the floor or it would have been gone too. I did get the 27 rolls though. The good news, the nice lady who helped me said that another store had over 100 rolls and she is trying to get it on the next truck to her store for me (the other store is 150+ miles)! The other good news is that they had unloaded a trailer full of Tractor Warehouse stock this morning and I got drive belts and blade belts for my riding mower for 1.79 each. They were still wet, but I got a dozen of each. Btw, they had castrating bands for cattle for 10 cents a package too, I passed on those.

I should know about the other solder on Tuesday since Monday is a holiday. She said if she gets it she will hold it all for me.

Thanks, Malcolm

Should have gotten those if some fresh New Orleans refugees get shipped your way.
