Jeepneys gone!

I just read in Singapore's Straits Times (an outstanding newspaper) that the Philippine government is getting rid of Jeepneys. What is the world coming to? They paved the roads in Olangapo and now getting rid of Jeepneys. Just another rant from an mold Navy guy.

Yeah, same story all over, time goes on, things change. The last time I was in the Caribbean, there wasn't a mini-moke to be found. They used to be the most common vehicle on the French and dutch islands, even though they were based on the English Austin Mini.

One of the interesting parts of the story. Their president said he wanted the people to travel in something more "environmentally sensitive" so was banning them by this month - all 234,000! He said the government would help replace the with electric jeepneys but only 20,000 per year could be produced (estimate). When asked what the poor people who depended on them for livelihoods would do he basically blew off the question saying they are poor people so would have to do something else. I enjoyed riding the jeepneys when my ship docked there and today Uber reminds me of them a bit.

if you've never been to olangopo, you havent experienced life! jeepneys were definately needed after you've worked your way down mac sai sai drive.

They are probably going to abolish corruption and poverty again, as well. Sometimes Third World governments have to be a whole lot better before they are equal.

This is really too bad for the not so fortunate Philipino jeepney driver and his family. It will cut into that 700-800 peso a month living expense. But, if I had a dime for every time I road a jeepney the 2 & 1/2 years I was at Clark I could buy a whole lot of brass, powder, and primers.

oh good memories there. met my first ship in subic, an LST and like you we pulled out and were in a typhoon by the first night.

I've ridden in many jeepneys, the "victory " bus line was also good for a laugh. Some of them had no center isle and the conductor had to go hand over hand back to the back to collect fares OUTSIDE the bus. They hauled everything and folks carried , chickens , pigs , etc. with them. They would stop anywhere and slow down and people would jump off before the bus stopped. A head call was anywhere, and you would get out and wizz alongside the road.
